Cable Removal

NOTE: Remove only one rear parking brake cable from the rear brakes at a time. Failure to do so will result in difficulty when connecting the parking brake cables to the equalizer or the park brake actuator lever at the rear brakes.

The procedure below can be used for either brake cable.

1. Remove the center console and load the parking brake automatic adjuster. This will relieve the tension from the parking brake cables.

Park Brake Cables At Equalizer:





2. Remove the parking brake cables from the Harking brake cable equalizer.
3. Remove the rear seat cushion from the vehicle.

Rear Door Sill Scuff Plates:





4. Remove the scuff plates from the right and left rear door sills. The scuff plates are attached to door sills using clips on bottom of scuff plates. Remove them by carefully prying the scuff plate off of the door sills.
5. Fold the rear carpeting forward to expose the parking brake cables.

6. Install the box end of a 1/2 inch wrench over the parking brake cable retainer as indicated. Push the wrench onto the retainer until the retainer fingers are collapsed. From under the carpeting, grasp the parking brake cable housing and pull cable straight out of the console bracket.
7. Raise the vehicle.
8. Remove the rear tire and wheel assembly from the vehicle.
9. On vehicles equipped with rear drum brakes, remove the brake drum. On vehicles equipped with rear disc brakes' remove the disc brake caliper from disc brake adapter, and then remove the brake rotor.

Rear Hub/Bearing Dust Cap Removal:





10. Remove the dust cap from the rear hub and bearing.

Hub/Bearing Retaining Nut:





11. Remove the hub and bearing retaining nut from the spindle.

Hub/Bearing Removal From Spindle (Drum Brakes Shown):





12. Remove the hub and bearing from the rear spindle.
13. On vehicles equipped with rear drum brakes:

Park Brake Cable Attachment To Actuating Lever:





^ Remove the parking brake cable from the parking brake actuating lever.

Brake Adjustment Lever Actuating Spring:





^ Remove the actuating spring between the brake shoe adjustment lever and the brake shoe.

Park Brake Cable Removal From Brake Support Plate:





^ Remove the parking brake cable from the rear brake support plate. The parking brake cable is removed from brake support plate using a l/2 inch wrench as shown to compress the locking fingers on the parking brake cable retainer.

14. On vehicles equipped with rear disc brakes:

Parking Brake Shoe Assemblies:





^ Remove the parking brake shoe assemblies from rear disc brake adapter.

Parking Brake Actuator Lever:





^ Remove the parking brake actuating lever from the parking brake cable.

Park Brake Cable Removal From Disc Brake Adapter:





^ Remove the parking brake cable from the rear disc brake adapter. The parking brake cable is removed from the disc brake adapter using a screwdriver as shown to compress the locking fingers on the parking brake cable retainer.

Park Brake Cable Routing Bracket:





15. Remove the parking brake cable routing bracket from the frame rail.

Park Brake Cable Seal At Floor Pan:





16. Remove the parking brake cable and sealing grommet from floor pan of vehicle and remove the cable from the vehicle.
