Removal and Installation

NOTE:
- Before proceeding with this removal and installation procedure, review the Service Precautions.
- Starting with the 1998 model year, different lining material is used on the rear disc brake shoes. Vehicles equipped with optional 4 wheel disc brakes use a new lining material on the rear disc brake shoes than prior model year vehicles equipped with this brake system. When new brake shoes are installed, be sure brake shoes for the correct model year and type of brake system the vehicle is equipped with are used.

REMOVAL
1. Raise the vehicle.
2. Remove both rear tire and wheel assemblies from vehicle.
3. Begin on one side of the vehicle.

Caliper Assembly Guide Pin Bolts:

4. Remove the 2 caliper assembly to adapter guide pin bolts.

Caliper Removal/Installation:

5. Remove the caliper assembly from adapter by first rotating the caliper assembly away from the adapter, and then lifting caliper assembly off the machined abutment on adapter.

Storing Caliper:

6. Support caliper assembly firmly, from rear strut to prevent weight of caliper from damaging the flexible brake hose.

Outboard Brake Shoe:

7. Remove the outboard brake shoe from the caliper by prying the brake shoe retaining clip over the raised area on the caliper. Then slide the brake pad down and off of the brake caliper.

Removing Installing Inboard Brake Shoe:

8. Pull the inboard brake pad away from caliper piston until the retaining clip is free from the cavity in the piston.
9. Repeat the above procedure to the rear brakes on the other side of the vehicle.

INSTALLATION
1. Begin on one side of the vehicle.
2. Completely retract the caliper piston back into the caliper piston bore. This is required to gain the necessary shoe-to-rotor clearance for the caliper installation onto the steering knuckle.
3. Lubricate both adapter abutments with a liberal amount of Mopar Multipurpose Lubricant, or equivalent.
4. Remove any protective paper from the noise suppression gasket on both inner and outer brake shoe assemblies (if equipped).
5. Install the inboard brake shoe into the caliper piston by firmly pressing the shoe in with the thumbs. Be sure the inboard brake shoe is positioned squarely against the face of the caliper piston.
6. Slide the outboard brake shoe assembly onto the caliper assembly. Be sure the retaining clip is squarely seated in the depressed areas on the caliper.

CAUTION: Use care when installing caliper assembly onto adapter, so the guide pin bushings and sleeves do not get damaged by the mounting bosses on adapter.

7. Carefully lower caliper and brake shoe assemblies over brake rotor by reversing the removal procedure. Make sure that caliper guide pin bushings and sleeves are clear of the adapter bosses.
8. Carefully install the caliper guide pin bolts into the adapter and tighten them to a torque of 22 Nm (192 inch lbs.).
9. Install the tire and wheel assembly. Tighten the wheel mounting nuts to the torque of 135 Nm (100 ft. lbs.).
10. Repeat the above procedure to the rear brakes on the other side of the vehicle.
11. Lower the vehicle.

NOTE: Before moving the vehicle after any brake service work, pump the brake pedal several times to ensure the vehicle has a firm brake pedal.

12. Road test the vehicle and make several stops to wear off any foreign material on the brakes and to seat the brake pads.
