REPAIR PROCEDURE:
This bulletin involves installing a steering wheel damper.
1. Record preset radio stations, disconnect and isolate the negative battery cable.
2. Remove the Driver Airbag Module attaching T-3O Torx bolts from back side of the steering wheel. Lift the module and disconnect the wire by:
(a) Lifting the secondary latch.
(b) Disconnect the connector from back of the airbag module using the finger grips. Use care not to pull on wires. Never use a metallic tool to pry on the connector.
3. Disconnect the horn wire from the airbag mounting bracket.
4. Remove nut attaching steering wheel to the steering column.
5. Install the steering wheel damper, p/n 04649160AB, over the steering shaft, with damper tabs in the steering wheel puller holes and U-shaped opening facing toward the 6 O'clock position (Figure 1).
6. Install the steering wheel attaching nut, tighten to 61 Nm (45 ft. lbs.) torque.
7. Connect horn wire to the airbag mounting bracket. Connect airbag module connector to the back of the module. Make airbag connection by pressing straight in on the connector. The connector should be fully seated to ensure a positive connection. Ensure that wires do not get pinched during installation.
8. Install the two airbag module bolts and tighten to 10 Nm (80 to 90 in. lbs.) torque.
9. Connect the Scan Tool (DRB III) to the data link connector which is located on the left side kick panel just above the hood release.
10. After checking that no one is inside vehicle, connect the negative battery cable.
11. Turn the ignition switch to the "ON" position by reaching through drivers window behind the steering wheel.
12. Using the scan tool read and record any diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs). Refer to the 1997 Cirrus/Sebring/Stratus/Breeze Body Diagnostic Procedures Manual (Publication No. 81-699-96031) if any DTC's are found.
13. Set the clock and radio station presets recorded in step # 1.
