Rear Axle Replacement

Fig.2 ABS Rear Speed Sensor Removal:




1. Raise and support vehicle, then remove tire and wheel assembly.
2. On models with anti-lock brake system (ABS), remove ABS rear speed sensor and O-ring.
CAUTION:
Exercise care when removing ABS sensor. Do not allow sensor pole piece tip to come in contact with other parts.
3. Remove brake components and suspend with wire.
4. Remove driveshaft as described under "Driveshaft, Replace".

5. Using end yoke holder tool No. MB990767, or equivalent, to secure axle shaft, remove companion shaft self-locking nut.
6. Using slide hammer tool No. C-637 and axle puller tool No. CT-0.003, or equivalents, remove axle shaft assembly.
7. Reverse procedure to install, noting the following:
a. Torque axle shaft self-locking nut to 188-217 ft. lbs.
