Carrier Pre-Disassemble Inspection
Fig.28 Differential Carrier Positioned In Working Base:
1. Support working base in a vise, and attach differential carrier to working base.
Fig.29 Final Drive Gear Backlash Measurement:
2. Check final drive gear backlash as follows:
a. Lock drive pinion in place, then mount dial indicator as shown.
b. Measure backlash at four points or more on the circumference of the drive gear. Backlash should be within 0.004-0.006 inch.
Fig.30 Drive Gear Runout Measurement:
3. Mount dial indicator as shown, then measure drive gear runout at the shoulder on the reverse side of drive gear. Runout should not exceed 0.002 inch.
Fig.31 Differential Gear Backlash Measurement:
4. On models except Stealth, lock side gear with a wedge as shown, then measure differential gear backlash with dial indicator on pinion gear. Differential gear backlash should not exceed 0.008 inch.
5. On all models, check final drive gear tooth contact as follows:
Fig.32 Final Drive Gear To Check Tooth Contact Marking:
a. Apply a thin, uniform coat of machine blue to both surfaces of drive gear teeth as shown.
Fig.33 Final Drive Gear Rotation:
b. Insert a brass rod between differential carrier and differential case, then rotate companion flange by hand (once in normal direction, and once in reverse direction) while applying a load to drive gear, so revolution torque applied to the drive pinion is approximately 28-33 inch lbs..
Fig.34 Final Drive Gear & Pinion Adjustment:
c. Compare and adjust tooth contact pattern as shown.
d. If correct tooth pattern cannot be obtained by adjustment, drive gear and drive pinion have exceeded their usage limit and both gears should be replaced as a set.
