Steering Column Overhaul

1. Remove steering column as outlined under "Steering Column, Replace."
2. Disassemble steering column in numbered sequence shown noting the following:

a. If it is necessary to remove the steering lock, use a hacksaw to cut the special bolts at steering lock bracket side.
3. Inspect steering column as follows:
a. Inspect steering shaft for play and round movement.
b. Inspect joints for play, damage, or rough movement.
c. Inspect joint bearing for wear and damage.
d. Inspect dust shield for damage.
4. Reverse procedure to install, noting the following:
a. When installing steering lock cylinder and steering lock bracket, temporarily install steering lock in alignment with column boss.
b. After ensuring steering lock operates correctly, tighten special bolts until heads twist off.
c. Fill inside of bearing with multipurpose grease, then install bearings to shaft on joint assembly.
d. Wrap vinyl tape 1 1/2 times around concave circumferences of bearings, and then press fit bearing into cover assembly.
