Master Cylinder Overhaul

Fig 27 Type 2 Master Cylinder:

When performing overhaul procedures, refer to the figure above.

DISASSEMBLE
When disassembling the master cylinder, note the position of all parts as they are removed for proper installation.

1. Use a wooden stick or dowel to depress primary piston into cylinder bore.
2. With pushrod depressed, remove piston stopper bolt, then piston stopper ring.
3. Release pushrod, then remove piston assemblies. If secondary piston assembly is stuck in the bore, apply a light amount of compressed air to the secondary outlet port until piston assembly works free.

CLEANING & INSPECTION
Examine reservoirs for foreign matter and check all passages for restrictions. If there is any indication of contamination or evidence of corrosion, service the hydraulic system as needed, then flush the entire system as described under Hydraulic System/Service and Repair/Brake System Bleed.

When disassembled, wash all parts in denatured alcohol or clean brake fluid. Use an air hose to blow out all passages, orifices and valve holes. Air dry and place parts on clean paper or lint-free cloth.

1. Check components for wear, damage, or corrosion. Replace as needed.
2. Check master cylinder bore for scoring, rust, pitting or etching. Replace as necessary.

ASSEMBLE
When assembling the master cylinder, use all parts contained in the repair kit. Coat all components in clean brake fluid, and place on a clean surface.
