Windshield Wipers - Erratic/Intermittent operation

Erratic/Intermittent Windshield Wiper Operation

MODELS:
1996 (PL) Neon

NOTE:
THIS BULLETIN APPLIES TO VEHICLES BUILT PRIOR TO MAY 1, 1996 (MDH 05-O1-XX).

SYMPTOM/CONDITION:
Erratic/Intermittent windshield wiper operation.

DIAGNOSIS:

To determine if the ground strap connection is at fault:

^ Remove the wiper arm and blade assemblies.

^ Remove the cowl screen.





^ Attempt to turn or move the ground strap screw by hand, if movement is felt perform the repair procedure. If no movement is felt further diagnosis is needed, refer to the Neon Service Manual (Publication Number 81-270-6025) Page 8K-2 to 8K-4. See Illustration.

PARTS REQUIRED:

1 06100548 Screw, (Paint Cutter, Length 20 mm, Diameter 12.5 mm (9/16))

REPAIR PROCEDURE:

This bulletin involves the use of a paint cutter screw to clean the tapping plate threads of any paint or foreign material from the wiper ground attachment.

1. Disconnect the motor wire connector at front plenum wall.

2. Remove the wiper module mounting screws and remove module.

3. Install the paint cutter screw (P/N 6100548) into the tapping plate bore.

4. Remove the paint cutter screw and clean off the threads. Install and remove one more time.

5. Clean the ground screw tapping plate bore of any loose material to insure bare metal is showing.

6. Install the wiper module and torque the mounting screws to 9 Nm (80 in. lbs.)

7. Connect the motor wire connector.

8. Cycle the windshield wiper switch to insure proper wiper module operation. Correct as needed.

9. Install cowl screen.

10. Install wiper arm and blade assemblies.
