NOTE:
THIS BULLETIN APPLIES TO VEHICLES EQUIPPED WITH A 41TE OR 42LE TRANSAXLE THAT WAS BUILT BETWEEN SEPT. 1, 1994 AND JULY 14, 1995 (TRANSAXLE IDENTIFICATION CODE NUMBER XXX-2088-XXX THRU XXX-2404-XXXX), REFER TO ILLUSTRATION.
SYMPTOM/CONDITION:
Transaxle defaults into 2nd gear limp-in prior to reaching normal operating temperature. In most cases the transaxle returns to normal operation after a restart. Transaxle Control Module (TCM) Diagnostic Trouble Code's (DTC's) 52 and/or 54 may or may not be accompanied with DTC 36.
DIAGNOSIS:
The 2nd gear limp-in condition may or may not be repeatable. Use the Mopar Diagnostic System (MDS) or the Scan Tool (DRB III) to check for the presence of DTO's 36, 52 and/or 54 in the TCM. If DTC's 36, 52 and/or 54 are found, perform the Repair Procedure.
PARTS REQUIRED:
1 4446620 Piston, 2-4 Accumulator (Aluminum)
2 4446544 Ring, Teflon Seal
AR 4798233 Fluid, Mopar ATF - Type 7176
REPAIR PROCEDURE:
This bulletin involves replacing the plastic 2-4 accumulator piston and seal ring with an aluminum accumulator piston with two seal rings.
1. Using the procedures outlined in Section 21 of the appropriate Service Manual, remove the transaxle valve body.
2. Remove the 2-4 accumulator retaining plate and the plastic accumulator piston.
3. Assemble the two teflon seal rings (P/N 4446544) on to the replacement aluminum piston (P/N 4446620).
4. Install the piston/seal ring assembly and retaining plate into the valve body.
5. Using the procedure outlined in Section 21 of the appropriate Service Manual, install the transaxle valve body, oil pan and adjust the transaxle fluid level.
6. Use the Mopar Diagnostic System (MDS) or the Scan Tool (DRB III) to erase the (DTC's) in the TCM.
NOTE:
1996 NS VEHICLES MAY HAVE A DTC 45 (CHECK TRANSMISSION SYSTEM) STORED IN THE POWERTRAIN CONTROL MODULE (PCM) AND MAY ILLUMINATE THE "CHECK ENGINE" LIGHT. ON THESE 1996 NS VEHICLES, THE DTC's IN THE TCM MUST BE ERASED FOLLOWED BY THE DTC'S IN THE PCM TO TURN THE "CHECK ENGINE" LIGHT OFF.
