DISCUSSION:
Proper assembly in the area of the chain case cover, oil pan and cylinder block is very critical to prevent oil leaks on 3.3L and 3.8L engines. To ensure a successful reassembly, the following information is provided to supplement the Technical Service Manual.
1. Be sure to scrape off all the old adhesive and gasket material without damaging the chain case cover or block.
2. When reassembling the chain case cover and gasket,**do not adhere the gasket to the cover. ** Position the new gasket carefully on the chain case cover so the lower edges of the gasket are flush to .020" (.5 mm) over flush to the lower edge of the cover. Do not overlap the water and oil passage O-rings.
Complete the reassembly using the existing Technical Service Manual procedure.
Some additional points to remember when diagnosing and repairing engine oil leaks:
A) Oil which contacts the oil pan gasket or the cylinder head cover gaskets tends to spread quickly around those gaskets from a "wicking" action. Be sure you locate the actual source of the oil to ensure a successful repair.
B) The best method for locating a leak that can not be seen quickly is ultraviolet dye and blacklight.
C) If the black light method does not identify the leak source, try the low pressure test (Remember 2 to 4 psi MAX). Refer to the April 1992 Master Tech for additional oil leak information.
