Reduced Transaxle Limp-In Default Sensitivity

NOTE:
**A SUPPLEMENT (PUBLICATION NO. 81-699-96074) TO THE 1996 41TE/AE TRANSAXLE AND 1996 42LE TRANSAXLE POWERTRAIN DIAGNOSTIC PROCEDURES MANUALS (PUBLICATION NO.'S 81-699-95014 AND 81-699-95015) HAS BEEN RELEASED.** THE SUPPLEMENT PROVIDES IMPROVED AND ADDITIONAL DIAGNOSTIC INFORMATION THAT COVERS: TRANSAXLE DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE (DTC) DESCRIPTION, TRANSMISSION DRIVEABILITY PROBLEMS WHEN NO DTC'S ARE PRESENT, AND A DESCRIPTION OF TRANSMISSION OPERATION BASED ON TRANSMISSION OIL SUMP TEMPERATURES.

THIS BULLETIN DOES NOT REQUIRE ANY PARTS TO BE CHANGED. THE TCM IS NOT TO BE REPLACED FOR THIS SOFTWARE IMPROVEMENT, IT IS TO BE FLASH UPDATED ONLY! THE TCM FLASH UPDATE OF THIS BULLETIN APPLIES TO 1996 MODEL YEAR VEHICLES EQUIPPED WITH A 41TE/AE OR 42LE TRANSAXLE AND WITHOUT THE FOLLOWING TCM PART NUMBERS:

DISCUSSION:

A new TCM calibration has been released for vehicles built starting in mid-February and is being made available to flash update previous 1996 model year 41TE/AE and 42LE applications. This new calibration will reduce the tendency for the transmission to go into the limp-in mode (2nd gear only in OD, 3 or L, PRN03L positions) for selected intermittent Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) conditions (i.e. TCM DTC's 15, 22, 50, 51, 52, 53, 54, 56, 57 and 58).

Previous calibrations would result in an immediate limp-in mode condition when a DTC was sensed during key "ON", when vehicle speed was below 45 MPH.

This new calibration will always set DTC's as soon as an electrical, mechanical or hydraulic problem is identified but, the transaxle may not go into the limp-in mode until the problem happens several times in a given key start (DTC's 22, 50, 51, 52, 53, 54, 56, 57 or 58) or after several key starts while identifying the DTC in park or neutral before vehicle operation begins (DTC 22). If DTC 24 and/or 37 is set, 1st gear and the Electronically Modulated Converter Clutch (EMCC) will be inhibited and no limp-in mode will occur. In addition this new calibration will eliminate DTC's 23,25,26, and 27 which would have been set when trouble with 2 or 3 of the pressure switch circuits existed. The new calibration will set a single fault code for every effected pressure switch circuit instead of one combinational code (23, 25, 26, 27).

After installing this flash update, hard DTC's (DTC's that occur every key start) will still eventually cause a limp-in condition for TCM DTC's 15, 22, 50, 51, 52, 53, 54, 56, 57 and 58 but will take more time and/or key starts than in previous calibrations.

Several hard as well as intermittent hardware related DTC's will be tolerated indefinitely and will not illuminate the Malfunction Indicator Light (MIL) and will not allow limp-in mode operation even though the DTC is set in the TCM as soon as the DTC is sensed (i.e. TCM DTC's 21 and 24).

DIAGNOSIS:

After a subject transaxle has been diagnosed and repaired, perform this flash update Repair Procedure.

NOTE:
AFTER THIS FLASH UPDATE HAS BEEN INSTALLED, IT IS CRITICAL THAT THE TOM AND THE POWERTRAIN CONTROL MODULE (PCM) ARE CHECKED FOR DTC'S AFTER THE VEHICLE HAS BEEN TEST DRIVEN BECAUSE DTC'S COULD BE PRESENT EVEN THOUGH NO PHYSICAL SIGNS OF A PROBLEM OCCURRED.

THE MDS AND DRB III ARE REQUIRED TO PERFORM THIS REPAIR AND THE SYSTEM MUST BE OPERATING WITH RELEASE 21 OR HIGHER AND TIL CD RELEASE 1123 OR HIGHER MUST BE INSTALLED.
