Technician Safety Information

GENERAL SAFETY PRECAUTIONS

^ Always wear appropriate eye protection.

^ Always block the drive wheels before servicing vehicle with wheels on the ground.

^ Always use jackstands when working under car. (Never work under a vehicle supported only by a jack.)

^ Always raise car on a flat, level, hard surface.

^ Use caution when working near the converter, to prevent burns.

^ Exercise care when working with spring or tension loaded fasteners such as E-clips, or snap rings, careless removal can cause personal injury.

FLOODED ENGINE PRECAUTIONS

^ Keep all flames, sparks and high heat sources away from flooded engines.

^ When draining oil contaminated by fuel, make sure the vehicle is located in a safe, well ventilated area.

^ Because of the possibility of raw fuel coming out of the spark plug holes when cranking a flooded engine after the spark plugs have been removed, the ignition system must be disabled to reduce the possibility of a spark causing ignition of the raw fuel.

SUPPLEMENTAL RESTRAINT SYSTEM (SRS) SAFETY PRECAUTIONS

NOTE: The following information applies only to vehicles equipped with airbag(s).

WARNING: Unintentional activation of an airbag due to improper removal, handling or installation of airbag, can lead to personal injury.

^ Do not use electrical test equipment on SRS circuits. (All SRS wiring harnesses have yellow outer insulation. SRS related components are located in the steering column, center console, dash, and front fenders.)

^ Disassembling or replacing airbags and related components requires special cautions and tools. SEE BODY ELECTRICAL SAFETY AND ENTERTAINMENT/PASSIVE RESTRAINS, AIR BAG

METHANOL SAFETY PRECAUTIONS

WARNING: Methanol is more toxic than gasoline, follow service precautions below:

^ Avoid breathing methanol fumes [1] or ingesting methanol [2].

^ Always wear methanol resistant gloves when servicing vehicle. Prolonged contact with skin may result in dry skin, an allergic reaction, or absorbtion through skin.

^ Methanol vapors are extremely flammable and can travel along the ground). Service vehicles in a well ventilated area, avoid ignition sources and never smoke while servicing vehicle.

[1] Breathing methanol vapors could result in headaches, dizziness and even unconsciousness.
[2] Ingesting methanol can result in serious injury, blindness or death.
