Lack of Power/Sluggish/Spongy
Symptom:: Engine delivers less than expected power. Little or no increase in speed when accelerator pedal is pushed down part way.NOTE: Compare customer's car to similar unit. Make sure the customer's car has an actual problem. Was the customer's old car much more powerful? Is vehicle operated under heavily loaded condition?
POSSIBLE CAUSES
Fuel System
- Clogged air filter.
- Throttle linkage for interference and proper travel.
- Restricted fuel filter or improper fuel pressure.
- Poor or contaminated gasoline (check for excessive alcohol content), suggest owner try different brand.
- Secondary air control system.
Ignition System
- Secondary ignition for correct sparking voltage and duration using a scope.
- Ignition timing.
Computers and Control Systems
- Engine Control Module (ECM) Grounds.
Emission Systems
- EGR operation for being open or partly open all the time.
Starting and Charging Systems
- Alternator output voltage.
Engine Mechanical
- Engine valve timing and compression.
- Worn camshaft lobe.
- Exhaust system restriction.
