Steering Gear: Service and Repair


1. Raise and support vehicle, then remove front wheels.
2. Remove tie rod ends with a suitable puller.
3. Disconnect engine damper strut from crossmember, if equipped.
4. Remove front suspension crossmember attaching bolts, then lower the crossmember using a transmission jack, so steering gear can be disconnected from steering column.
5. Disconnect hoses from steering gear.
6. Remove bolts attaching steering gear to crossmember, then remove steering gear from crossmember.
7. Reverse procedure to install, noting the following:
a. It may be necessary to use an assistant inside vehicle to guide steering column coupling onto steering gear.
b. Right rear crossmember bolt is a pilot bolt that correctly locates crossmember. Tighten this bolt first, then torque all crossmember attaching bolts to 90 ft-lbs.
c. Tighten bolts attaching steering gear to crossmember to specifications.
d. Check for oil leaks.
e. Adjust toe as outlined under "Wheel Alignment".
