Starter Control Circuit Test

The starter control circuit consists of the starter solenoid, starter relay, ignition switch, neutral safety switch and all related wiring and connections.

Starter Solenoid Test

1. Verify battery is fully charged and in good condition.
2. Raise and support vehicle.
3. Inspect starter and starter solenoid for corrosion or loose wiring.
4. Lower vehicle and remove starter relay from connector.

5. On Acclaim, LeBaron, Shadow, Spirit and Sundance models, connect a remote starter switch or a jumper wire between the battery positive post and terminal 87 on starter relay connector.

6. On Breeze, Cirrus and Stratus models, connect a remote starter switch or a jumper wire between the battery positive post and terminal 79 on starter relay connector.

7. On Neon models, connect a remote starter switch or a jumper wire between the battery positive post and terminal 31 on starter relay connector.
8. On all models, if engine cranks, starter and starter solenoid are operating correctly; perform starter relay test.
9. If engine does not crank or solenoid chatters, check wiring and connectors from relay to starter for loose or corroded connections.
10. Repeat test and, if engine still does not crank properly, repair or replace starter or starter solenoid as necessary.
