Compressor HVAC: Service and Repair


1. Install a suitable belt tension gauge in the middle of belt span.
2. Correct belt tension is 135 lbs. for new belts and 80 lbs. for used belts. [01]
3. Adjust belt tension as follows:

a. Loosen idler bracket pivot screw and locking screws.
b. Adjust tension by applying torque to square hole on idler bracket.
c. Adjust new belt to 135 lbs. and used belt to 80 lbs.
d. Torque locking screws, then pivot screw to 40 ft. lbs.
4. Check belt tension after driving vehicle.



[01] -- A belt which has been installed and run for 15 minutes is considered "used".
