Backlite - Ticking/Knocking Noise

Backlite Rattle

SYMPTOM/CONDITION:
Ticking or metallic knocking noise coming from backlite area. Noticeable when vehicle hits bumps or dips in the road surface.
DIAGNOSIS:
NOTE:
VEHICLE MUST BE AT LEAST 30 DAYS OLD BEFORE PERFORMING DIAGNOSIS. THIS WILL ELIMINATE BACKLITE CREAK NOISE DUE TO URETHANE NOT BEING SET UP.
Drive vehicle over road surface that will induce rattle. Have someone in the back seat touch backlite as noise occurs. If noise can be felt in the glass especially toward either end or lower corners of backlite, perform the repair procedure. If noise cannot be felt or heard in backlite, continue rattle diagnosis.
REPAIR PROCEDURE:
This repair involves resetting the backlite.
1. Remove and reset backlite as described on page 23-46 of the 1994 New Yorker, LHS, Concorde, Intrepid, and Vision Service Manual (Publication No. 81-270-4140) being careful to position glass so it does not touch body sheet metal. Position glass as high as possible in opening.
NOTE:
THERE MAY BE EXCESS SEALER IN THE UPPER CORNERS OF THE BACKLITE OPENING PREVENTING THE GLASS FROM BEING SET HIGH ENOUGH TO GAIN CLEARANCE AT THE BOTTOM CORNERS. REMOVE SEALER AS NECESSARY.
THE URETHANE ADHESIVE MUST BE FULLY CURED (UP TO 24 HOURS) BEFORE OPERATING VEHICLE OR GLASS CAN MOVE AND TOUCH SHEET METAL. GLASS MUST BE TAPED IN OPENING DURING CURING.
A NEW MOLDING MUST BE USED WHEN RESETTING OR REPLACING BACKLITE. COAT THE NEW MOLDING WITH MOPAR WEATHERSTRIP LUBRICANT P/N 4773427, BEFORE INSTALLATION.
2. If glass still touches sheet metal, it will be necessary to install a new backlite. Request a glass built during December, 1993 or later from your Authorized Mopar Glass Distributor. This glass will be slightly smaller and easier to obtain the necessary clearance.
