Hybrid Passenger Airbag - Introduction/Operation

NO: 08-18-94

GROUP: Electrical

DATE: Apr. 8, 1994

SUBJECT:
Hybrid Passenger Airbag

MODELS:

1994 (LH) Concorde/Intrepid/Vision/LHS/New Yorker

DISCUSSION:

A hybrid passenger airbag is being incorporated into 1994 LH vehicles. This includes hybrid passenger airbag module, airbag diagnostic module (ASDM), and an instrument panel wiring harness assembly. Vehicles built at Newark Assembly Plant ("F" in the eleventh VIN position) started using the hybrid passenger airbag on February 21, 1993 (MDH 02-21-XX). Vehicles built at Bramalea Assembly Plant ("H" in the eleventh VIN position) will have the hybrid passenger airbag beginning in April, 1994.

The hybrid airbag Inflator combines a pressurized container of argon gas with a detonator that can be triggered by a electrical signal from the control module. The detonator physically creates a large hole in the container that allows the gas to escape instantly, inflating the air bag. The container has a built in pressure switch to monitor for correct container fill. A new Diagnostic Trouble Code which reads "Hybrid Pressure Switch - Open/Shorted," can be accessed by the Scan Tool (DRB II/III).

Parts CANNOT be mixed between the two systems. Each component MUSTbe replaced with the same part number component removed from the vehicle.

Vehicles equipped with the hybrid passenger airbag can be identified by an "H" in the fourth character of the VIN.
