Coolant - Fill Procedure, Manual Supplement

NO.:

GROUP:

SUBJECT:
Service Manual Supplement - Coolant Fill Procedure

MODELS:

1993 (LH) Concorde/Intrepid/Vision

DISCUSSION:

WHENEVER THE COOLING SYSTEM IS BEING REFILLED OR THE COOLANT LEVEL IS BELOW THE PRESSURE BOTTLE OUTLET, THE FOLLOWING PROCEDURE SHOULD BE USED.

DO NOT PERFORM THIS PROCEDURE WHEN THE ENGINE IS RUNNING OR IS HOT.

STANDARD COOLANT FILL PROCEDURE

1. Remove the coolant deaeration pressure bottle cap.

2. Attach one end of a 6.35 mm (0.25 in.) ID clear hose that is approximately 1220 mm (48 in.) long, to the thermostat bleed valve. Route the hose away from the drive belts. Place the other end of the hose into a clean container.

3. Open the bleed valve.

4. Pour the coolant mixture (demineralized water and glycol engine coolant) into the pressure bottle until coolant begins to seep from the bleed valve. Top off the bottle at this point. If the coolant fails to bleed from the valve, refer to the following ALTERNATE COOLANT FILL PROCEDURE.

5. While coolant continues to bleed from the valve, pull the upper radiator hose toward the coolant module and quickly release it. Repeat this step 10 times. This helps remove any air bubbles trapped in the system.

6. When the coolant level is 1/2 inch above the pressure bottle lower hose, close the bleed valve and remove the 6.35 mm (0.25 in.) hose.

7. Fill the pressure bottle to the "COLD FILL LEVEL" mark ("MIN" mark on early built vehicles) and install the cap on the pressure bottle.

ALTERNATE COOLANT FILL PROCEDURE

THIS PROCEDURE SHOULD ONLY BE USED IF NO COOLANT SEEPS FROM THE THERMOSTAT BLEED VALVE DURING THE STANDARD COOLANT FILL PROCEDURE.

CONTINUE THIS PROCEDURE FROM WHERE YOU STOPPED THE STANDARD COOLANT FILL PROCEDURE.

1. Remove the coolant temperature sensor (located near the thermostat housing).

2. Top off the coolant bottle.

3. When coolant begins to seep from the coolant temperature sensor hole, install the sensor.

4. Fill the pressure bottle to 1/2 inch from the top. Coolant may or may not begin to seep from the bleed valve.

5. Pull the upper radiator hose toward the coolant module and quickly release it. Repeat this step 10 times. This helps remove any air bubbles trapped in the system. This should be done regardless of whether or not coolant is seeping from the thermostat bleed valve.

6. If coolant is seeping from the bleed valve, shut the valve when the coolant reaches the "COLD FILL LEVEL" mark ("MIN" mark on early built vehicles). Otherwise, close the bleed valve and open the radiator drain cock until the coolant level reaches the "MIN" mark.

7. Install the cap on the pressure bottle and remove the 6.35 mm (0.25 in.) hose from the bleed valve.
