A visual inspection for loose, disconnected, damaged, or misrouted wires and hoses should be made prior to attempting to diagnose or service the fuel injection system. A visual inspection will help spot these problems and save unnecessary test and diagnostic time. A thorough inspection includes the following:1. Check the ignition coil electrical connections (primary and secondary), and wire conditions.
Purge Solenoid:
2. Check the canister purge solenoid vacuum and electrical line connections, condition and routing.
Electronic EGR Transducer (EET):
3. Check the Electronic EGR Transducer (EET) electrical and vacuum line connections and condition.
Manifold Absolute Pressure (MAP) Sensor:
4. Check the Manifold Absolute Pressure (MAP) sensor vacuum and electrical line connections and condition.
5. Check the alternator wiring for proper connections and condition.
6. Check the alternator drive belt for proper installation and adjustment.
Vapor Canister:
7. Check the vapor canister vacuum lines for proper connections, condition, and routing.
Throttle Body Wiring Connections:
8. Check the throttle body wiring connections and condition.
Throttle Body Harness Connector:
9. Check the throttle body to main harness connector for proper condition and connections.
10. Check the throttle body and intake manifold vacuum lines for proper connections and condition.
11. Check the EET and PCV hose connections and condition.
12. Check the heated air door vacuum line for proper connections and condition.
13. Check the power brake booster and speed control vacuum line for proper connections and condition.
14. Check the spark plug wires for proper routing and correct seating on the spark plugs.
Coolant Temperature Sensor:
15. Check the coolant temperature sensor electrical wire condition and connection.
16. Check the negative battery cable ground eyelet for proper connection on the left side of the cylinder head.
Electrical Connections:
17. Check the distributor wiring connections and condition.
18. Check the radiator fan electrical wiring connection and condition.
19. Check the oil pressure switch electrical wiring connection and condition.
Automatic Transmission Electrical Connections:
20. Check the neutral safety switch electrical wiring connection and condition (A/T only)
21. Check the torque converter lockup solenoid electrical wiring connection and condition (A/T only).
Single Board Engine Controller (SBEC):
22. Check the 60 way engine controller connector is properly seated, and the connector and wiring loom is free from damage.
Relay Location/Identification:
23. Check the electrical relay connections, and the relays and power distribution center for physical damage.
24. Check the engine harness to main harness connectors for proper seating and connections.
Vehicle Speed Sensor (VSS):
25. Check the distance sensor electrical wiring for proper connection and condition.
26. Check the engine ground strap for proper connections at the engine and dash panel.
27. Check the oxygen sensor electrical wiring for proper connections and condition.
28. Check fuel pump electrical and fuel connections at the fuel pump.
