Campaign - Alternator Replacement

91chrysler04

No. 494 April, 1991

To: All Dodge and Chrysler-Plymouth Dealers

Subject: Customer Satisfaction Notification # 494 -- Alternator Replacement

Models: 1991 Model Year AP (Plymouth Sundance America, Dodge Shadow America) Equipped With Air Conditioning, Vehicles Built Through September 26, 1990

A 90 amp alternator was intended to be installed on the above A/C equipped vehicles. By error, a 75 amp alternator was installed on early built cars (through 09/26/90). The 75 amp alternator will not be able to maintain the required electrical load, and may result in charging system problems (battery depletion) in high draw (A/C use) vehicle operation. To correct the condition, a 90 amp alternator must be installed.

Important: Some of the involved vehicles may still be in dealer stock. Be sure to complete the service on these vehicles before retail delivery.

Details of this service action are explained in the following sections.

Note: No videotape of the service procedure will be provided for this recall because it is not considered necessary.

Vehicle List

Each dealer to whom involved vehicles were invoiced (or the current dealer at the same location) will receive a vehicle list with this letter arranged in Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) sequence. Owners known to Chrysler are also listed. The lists are for dealer reference in arranging for service of involved vehicles.

Each Dodge or Chrysler-Plymouth dealer without a Vehicle List will receive an information copy of this lefter by Compak Mail for use in performing the service on involved vehicles upon request.

Parts

Important: Recall parts will be shipped and billed to involved dealers in accordance with the recently announced Recall Parts Pricing policy.

A partial quantity of alternators will be distributed initially to all involved dealers. As this quantity will be only a portion of the total parts requirement, dealers must order additional parts as needed to support customer demand.

Parts (Continued)

Each dealer to whom vehicles in the recall were invoiced (or the current dealer at the same location) will receive enough alternators, Recall PN C3940418, to service 25% of those vehicles.

Owner Notification and Service Scheduling

All involved vehicle owners known to Chrysler are being notified of the service requirement by first class mail. They are requested to schedule appointments for the service with their dealers at the earliest possible date. A copy of the owner notification letter is attached.

Enclosed with each owner notification is an Owner Recall Notification Form. The involved vehicle and recall are identified on the form for owner or dealer reference as needed.

Service Procedure

1. With ignition key in the OFF position, disconnect the battery.

2. Remove the A/C compressor drive belts.

3. Remove the compressor attaching nuts and bolts and move the compressor aside for access to the alternator.
