Dashboard / Instrument Panel: Service and Repair
1. Disarm airbag, refer to Air Bags and Seat Belts/Air Bags (Supplemental Restraint Systems)/Service and Repair.2. On 1989 models, proceed as follows:
a. Remove windshield wiper arms.
b. Remove windshield washer fluid reservoir.
c. Pull connector loose from A/C heater resistor block, then push wiring and grommet through bulkhead and into passenger compartment.
3. On all models, remove console assembly, if equipped, as follows:
a. Remove shifter handle.
b. Unsnap shift indicator bezel or shift boot bezel from console, disconnect wiring, then remove bezel assembly.
c. On 1989 models, open armrest lid and remove three screws attaching armrest to console retractor bracket.
d. On all models, remove four caps which cover attaching screws, then remove four attaching screws.
e. Lift console up and over shift mechanism to remove.

4. Remove front and center console assemblies, if equipped as follows:
a. Remove shifter handle.
b. Unsnap shift indicator bezel or shift boot bezel from console assembly, disconnect wiring, then remove bezel assembly.
c. Unsnap power mirror/window switch bezel, if equipped, then disconnect switch wiring.
d. Open armrest lid and remove three screws attaching armrest to console retractor bracket.
e. Remove armrest and center console section as a unit by lifting and unsnapping from front console section.
f. Remove center module bezel.
g. Remove front console and sidewalls as a unit by removing six screws attaching sidewall to instrument panel and console bracket.
h. Slide front console assembly rearward, then lift to remove.
5. On 1989 models, proceed as follows:
a. Disconnect passive restraint seat belt logic control module wiring connector.
b. Remove six attaching nuts securing instrument panel to console support brace.
c. Remove instrument-to-console support brace with passive restraint seat belt logic control module attached.
6. On all models, remove right and left cowl side and scuff plate trim mouldings as follows:
a. Remove three scuff plate trim moulding attaching screws.
b. Remove cowl side trim attaching screw and lower most push-pin from A-pillar trim mouldings.
c. Remove side cowl and scuff plate trim mouldings.
7. Remove right and left A-pillar trim mouldings by removing remaining push-pins.

8. Remove instrument panel top cover as follows:
a. Insert suitable trim stick tool in groove between instrument panel top cover and instrument panel pad surface.
b. Pry cover up and forward until cover is released from instrument panel pad.
c. Lift top cover up and rearward to remove.

9. Remove lower steering column cover as follows:
a. On 1989 models, disconnect parking brake release rod from parking brake handle.
b. Remove two screws attaching hood release handle, then the handle.
c. Remove fuse access door, then remove lower steering column cover attaching screw located directly above fuse block.
d. Remove six attaching screws around outside of steering column cover, then the cover.
10. On all models, disconnect steering column wiring from 25-way connector.
11. Disconnect parking brake, stop lamp and cruise control wiring, if equipped.
12. Remove five steering column support nuts, lower steering column, then remove two column attaching studs.
13. On all models, disconnect engine wiring harness from 18-way and 16-way connectors located on left side panel support bracket.
14. On models with floor brace located under center of instrument panel, remove nuts attaching intermediate bracket to upper and lower brackets.

15. On 1989 models, remove glove box module as follows:
a. Open glove box door, then remove check strap attaching screws to allow full downward movement of glove box door.
b. Remove six screws attaching glove box module to instrument panel.
c. Pull glove box module rearward, disconnect wiring from glove box lamp and switch, then remove glove box module.
16. On all models, loosen instrument panel pivot bolts.
17. On 1989 models, remove defroster duct adapter from defroster duct.
18. On all models, remove screws attaching instrument panel to cowl panel.
19. Roll instrument panel down, attach heavy wire to hold in position, then remove defroster duct retaining screws.
20. Disconnect body wiring from right side 18-way connector and left side 25-way connector.
21. Disconnect temperature mode cable from control unit, vacuum line from inline connector and resistor block and blower motor wiring connections.
22. Disconnect speedometer and antenna cables.
23. Disconnect left and right demister hoses from demister outlets on panel.
24. Disconnect remaining electrical connections and radio ground strap.
25. Remove instrument panel pivot bolts, then the instrument panel.
26. Reverse procedure to install.
27. Refer to MAINTENANCE PROCEDURES/AIRBAG ARMING/DISARMING to reactivate airbag.
