Manual Transmission/Transaxle: Service and Repair
1. Disconnect battery ground cable.
2. Remove gearshift lever assembly as follows:
a. Remove gearshift knob, spool release levers and rear console box trim plate.
b. Remove rear console liner and the rear console box.
c. Remove console side covers, front console box and shift boot retainer ring.
d. Ensure shifter is in neutral, remove bolts securing gearshift assembly, disconnect stopper plate from extension housing, then lift gearshift assembly off extension housing.
3. Place a suitable insulator at rear of cylinder head to prevent damage, then raise and support vehicle.
4. Drain transmission, then remove propeller shaft.
5. Disconnect speedometer cable and back-up light switch wiring harness.
6. Remove clutch release cylinder, bellhousing cover and starter motor.
7. Using suitable jack, support transmission.
8. Remove transmission to engine attaching bolts.
9. Remove engine support bracket, insulator assembly, and ground cable.
10. Lower jack and remove transmission from under vehicle.
11. Reverse procedure to install, torquing bolts as follows: starter motor mounting bolts, 16-23 ft. lbs.; engine to transmission mount bolts, 31-40 ft. lbs.; drain plug, 44 ft. lbs.; oil filter plug, 22-25 ft. lbs.; back-up light switch, 22 ft. lbs.; under cover attaching bolts 6-7 ft. lbs.; and speedometer sleeve clamp bolt, 7.5-9.0 ft. lbs.
