DIFFERENTIAL CASE ASSEMBLY

1. Remove bearing cap and cap bolts.
2. Remove differential case assembly using the wooden handle of two hammers to avoid damaging the gears.
3. Using puller MB990810 and adapter MB990811, remove side bearing inner races.
4. Scribe alignment mark on differential case and drive gear, then remove drive gear attaching bolts and the drive gear. Loosen bolts alternately in a diagonal sequence.
5. On conventional type units, remove lock pin with a suitable punch, then the pinion shaft, pinion gears, washers and side gears with spacers.
6. On limited slip type units, remove differential case-to-cover attaching screws, then the cover. Remove components from differential case. If cover attaching screws are difficult to remove, fit pipes (approximately 1.97 inch O.D.) over ends of differential case and cover. Apply approximately 1,760 lbs. of pressure to assembly, through the pipes, and remove screws. Ensure that there is an alignment mark on case and cover. If not, make suitable mark with punch.

DRIVE PINION

1. Hold spline coupling with tools MB990907 and MB9900850 and remove mounting nut.
2. Scribe alignment mark on drive pinion and spline coupling, then drive out front pinion with spacer and front shims.
3. Using tools C-293-PA and MB990648, remove drive pinion rear bearing inner race from shaft.
4. Remove drive pinion front and rear bearing outer races using a suitable drift.
5. Remove drive shaft oil seal.
