Removal and Replacement


1. Disconnect battery ground cable.
2. Drain transmission fluid as follows:
a. Loosen oil pan attaching bolts, then place a suitable container under transmission and allow fluid to drain.
b. Reinstall oil pan.
3. Remove filler tube attaching bolts, then the filler tube.
4. Raise and support vehicle.
5. Remove two upper transmission attaching bolts using a suitable tool.
6. Remove starter attaching bolts, then position aside.
7. Remove oil cooler supply and return tube retaining bracket from cylinder block, then disconnect the oil cooler tubes from oil cooler hoses.
8. Remove flywheel cover, then rotate crankshaft clockwise until torque converter to drive plate attaching bolts are at lowest position and each can be removed.
9. Disconnect speedometer cable to transmission.
10. Disconnect control rod and connection lever at cross shaft assembly, then remove cross shaft.
11. Disconnect ground cable, then remove propeller shaft. Mark position of propeller shaft prior to removal.
12. Support rear of engine with a suitable jack, then the transmission assembly.
13. Remove engine support rear bracket, then the transmission attaching bolts.
14. Separate transmission from engine, then lower transmission from vehicle.
15. Reverse procedure to install, noting the following:


Fig. 28 Torque converter to flex plate clearance. JM600 models:





a. Ensure torque converter bolts to flex plate clearance, dimension ``A,'' Fig. 28, is 1.38 inches or more.
b. Add Dexron or Dexron II type fluid on 1985 models or Dexron II type fluid on 1986-88 models as required.
c. Adjust inhibitor switch as previously described.
