Engine: Service and Repair


1. Release residual fuel pressure as follows:
a. Start engine, then disconnect electrical connector from fuel pump.
b. When engine stops from lack of fuel, turn off ignition. Failure to release pressure prior to disconnecting fuel lines may cause fire or personal injury.
2. Disconnect battery ground cable, then drain cooling system.
3. Disconnect accelerator cable, heater hoses, brake booster vacuum hose, and the fuel hoses.
4. Disconnect coil high tension cable from distributor then the intake manifold ground cable connector.
5. Disconnect starter motor wiring harness, then the power steering pump.
6. Disconnect engine oil cooler hoses, then remove radiator assembly.
7. Disconnect alternator wiring harness, then the engine ground cable.
8. Disconnect ECI unit wiring harness, then the boost sensor hose.
9. Remove rear catalytic converter, then disconnect speedometer cable.
10. On models with automatic transmission, disconnect transmission oil cooler lines.
11. On all models, disconnect back-up light switch, then remove propeller shaft.
12. Disconnect oil pressure gauge wiring harness, then remove clutch release cylinder.
13. Remove engine mounting bolts, then the gearshift lever assembly.
14. Attach engine to a suitable lifting fixture, then remove engine/transmission assembly from vehicle.
15. Reverse procedure to install, noting the following:
a. Torque front insulator stopper attaching bolt to 22-29 ft. lbs.
b. Torque engine mounting front insulator attaching bolt to 22-29 ft. lbs.
c. Torque engine support bracket and heat insulator attaching bolt to 9.4 - 14 ft. lbs.
d. Torque distance piece, plate and lockwasher to cushion pad attaching bolt to 7.2 ft. lbs.
e. Add coolant to cooling system, then fill transmission to specifications.
f. Adjust clutch and accelerator cable, then adjust hood alignment.
