Diesel Engine - New Crankshaft/Center Bolt Design

NUMBER: 09-006-06

GROUP: Engine

DATE: June 17, 2006

SUBJECT:
New Crankshaft and Center Bolt Design

OVERVIEW:
This bulletin describes the new crankshaft and center bolt design as well as the revised service procedures.

MODELS:

2002 - 2006 (VA) Sprinter

NOTE:
This bulletins applies to both the 0M612 and the 0M647 engines.

DISCUSSION:

The design of the crankshaft and center bolt was changed for OM647 engines in March 2006. The first engine built with the new design has the serial number 51-186332. The new design features the following changes:

^ The front of the new design crankshaft has a keyway consisting of one instead of two keyway slots (Fig. 1) and (Fig. 2).

^ The new key is shorter and has a different shape (Fig. 1) and (Fig. 2).

^ The new center bolt has an "1150" instead of "10.9" (stamped on center bolt head) (Fig. 3) and (Fig. 4).

^ The thread design for both the crankshaft and the center bolt has been changed.

REPLACEMENT PROCEDURE:

All engines with serial number 51-186332 or higher have the new crankshaft design. If servicing an engine with serial number 51-186331 or lower identify the crankshaft design by looking at the keyway (Fig. 1) and (Fig. 2).

Crankshaft Replacement:

^ If the crankshaft requires replacement, order the crankshaft, p/n 05080012AA. When the replacement crankshaft is received, order the appropriate center bolt and key.

NOTE:
The replacement crankshaft could be either an old or new design crankshaft.

Servicing the center bolt or key with an old design crankshaft (two keyway slots):

^ Use an old design center bolt, p/n 05073696AA, and key, p/n 05073998AA.

Servicing the center bolt or key with a new design crankshaft (one keyway slot):

^ Use a new design center bolt, p/n 68002040AA, and key, p/n 05170759AA.

CAUTION:
The new and old center bolts are not interchangeable even if they fit physically. Using a new design center bolt on an old design crankshaft may result in severe damage.

PARTS OVERVIEW:

Center Bolt Tightening Procedure:

CAUTION:
Be sure to use the correct center bolt: "10.9" marking on the center bolt head must be used with an old design crankshaft (with a two slot keyway) or "1150" marking on the center bolt head with the new design crankshaft (with a single slot keyway).

1. Always install a new crankshaft center bolt.

2. Is the crankshaft center bolt head marking "10.9" or "1150"?

a. "10.9" >> go to Step # 3. b. "1150" >> go to Step # 6.

3. Tighten the center bolt to 325 N.m (240 lbs. ft.).

4. Mark the center bolt head and the vibration damper as shown in (Fig. 5).

5. Tighten the center bolt an additional 90° (Fig. 6).

6. Tighten the center bolt to 200 N.m (147 lbs. ft.).

7. Mark the center bolt head and the vibration damper as shown in (Fig. 5).

8. Tighten the center bolt an additional 180° (Fig. 7).
