Fig. 11 Removing tripod from housing. 1992 S.S.G. units:

1. Remove boot clamps and pull back boot to access retention system.
2. On S.S.G. units, pry wire ring tripod retainer from groove around top of housing using a flathead screwdriver. Do not distort or destroy retainer ring.
3. On G.K.N. units, clamp shaft of C/V joint housing in a vise. Use protective caps on jaws of vice to prevent damage to shaft.

5. On S.S.G. and G.K.N models with single ring tripod retention, remove tripod assembly from interconnecting shaft by removing shaft retaining snap ring from interconnecting shaft.
6. Remove assembly from interconnecting shaft by tapping on body of tripod assembly with a brass hammer.
7. On G.K.N. units with double ring tripod retention, expand and remove outer tripod assembly to interconnecting shaft retaining snap ring.
8. Remove tripod assembly from interconnecting shaft by tapping on body of tripod assembly with a brass hammer. Do not hit outer bearing when removing assembly from interconnecting shaft.

INSPECTION

Remove grease from assembly and inspect bearing race, tripod components, spring, spring cup and spherical end of connecting shaft for excessive wear or damage and replace if necessary.

ASSEMBLY

1. On S.S.G. and G.K.N. units with single ring retention, install new boot to interconnecting shaft, then tripod assembly until it is past ring groove.
2. Install new snap ring into interconnecting shaft.
3. On G.K.N. units with double ring retention, install new boot to interconnecting shaft, then inner tripod snap ring to interconnecting shaft.
4. Install tripod assembly onto interconnecting shaft. If necessary tap tripod assembly onto interconnecting shaft using an brass hammer.
5. Install outer tripod assembly snap ring to interconnecting shaft.
6. On all models, install inner C/V joint housing as follows:

Fig. 15 Spring & cup installation:

b. Place spring into housing spring pocket with spring cup attached to exposed end of spring.
c. Place small amount of grease on concave surface of spring cup.
d. On G.K.N. models, clamp stub shaft of housing in a vice. Use a vice with protective caps on jaws.
e. Position interconnecting shaft and tripod assembly on top of plastic retaining collar.
f. Holding shaft on an angle, insert each of the rollers one at a time into retainer collar until all are seated and locked into housing.
g. On S.S.G. units, slip tripod into housing and install tripod wire retaining ring into position.
h. Ensure retaining ring will hold tripod in housing, if not replace retaining ring.
