This technical service bulletin covers the procedure for replacing the speedometer drive (worm) gear on 1989 two wheel drive Dodge Ram Pickups equipped with the Cummins Diesel and GETRAG - G360 - Manual Transmission.

Add the speedometer drive gear to the list of authorized remove/replacement parts on Page 21-2 of the 1989 Rear-WheelDrive Truck Diesel Supplement Service Manual (81-370-9008A) Figure 1. Permanently affix the enclosed speedometer drive gear replacement procedure, Page 21-2A and 2B, between Pages 21-2 and 21-3 of the manual.

SPEEDOMETER DRIVE (WORM) GEAR REPLACEMENT

1. Raise vehicle.

2. Scribe alignment marks on the propeller shaft universal joint and rear axle pinion flange and transmission flange to ensure correct reassembly.

3. Remove the propeller shaft.

4. Disconnect the speedometer cable at the transmission, remove the speedometer pinion adapter from the transmission rear retainer housing.

5. Position holding tool C-3281 over the yoke flange and remove nut.

CAUTION: THE TORQUE ON THE YOKE NUT IS 280 FT.LBS (390 N-m).

6. Remove yoke and seal.

7. Remove the rear speedometer gear spacer and drive gear - Figure 2.
8. Install the new speedometer drive gear (P/N 4549212).

9. Install the rear speedometer spacer.

10. Install a new output shaft seal (P/N 4504583).

11. Install yoke.

12. Apply Lock N'Seal P/N 4318031 (LOCTITE 242) to the yoke nut threads.

13. Install yoke nut and tighten to 280 ft.lbs (390 N-m) torque.

14. Inspect the speedometer pinion gear and replace if required.

15. Install the speedometer adapter and index as shown in Figure 3. Connect the speedometer cable.
16. Install the propeller shaft.

NOTE: BE SURE TO INDEX THE PROPELLER SHAFT WITH THE SCRIBE ALIGNMENT MARKS.

17. Lower vehicle.
