Idle Speed: Adjustments

Fig. 2 Idle Speed Adjustment:

Idle speed adjustment should be performed with engine hot and fan motor not running and with the vehicle transmission in neutral or park position. In the case of a tachometer which picks up signals from the primary circuit and is not provided with a three cylinder range, take the reading of the speed on a six cylinder range. Then, multiply this reading by 2. This value is the actual revolution speed for the three cylinder engine.

1. Connect tachometer measuring terminal to ignition coil negative (-) terminal. Never allow the tachometer terminal to touch ground as it could result in damage to the igniter and/or ignition coil. Make certain tachometer is compatible before beginning work.
2. Run engine at 2500 RPM for two minutes.
3. Remove idle adjusting screw cap from throttle body, Fig. 2.
4. Set idle speed, by turning idle speed adjusting screw, to 750-850 RPM.
5. Replace adjusting screw cap and remove tachometer from engine.
