Cylinder Head - Installation

INSTALLATION

NOTE: Left side shown, right side similar.

1. If replacing the cylinder head, transfer the valves, valve seals and valve springs to the new cylinder head , Intake And Exhaust Valves - Installation if valve refacing is necessary Refacing. Procedures
2. If replacing the cylinder head, transfer the spark plugs to the new cylinder head . Spark Plug - Installation





3. If replacing the cylinder head, transfer the exhaust manifold to the new cylinder head using a new gasket.
4. Using the sequence shown, tighten the exhaust manifold bolts/studs to 25 Nm (18 ft. lbs.).






CAUTION: The cylinder head gaskets are not interchangeable between the left and right sides. They are marked with an "L" and "R" to indicate the left or right side and they are marked "TOP" to indicate which side goes up.





5. Clean all gasket sealing surfaces of the cylinder block and cylinder heads using a suitable solvent.

6. Position the new cylinder head gaskets (5) onto the cylinder block.
7. Position the cylinder heads (4) onto the head gaskets (5) and the cylinder block.






NOTE: Left side shown, right side similar.

8. Using the sequence shown, tighten the cylinder head bolts 1 through 10 to 34 Nm (25 ft. lbs.).
9. Using the sequence shown, tighten the cylinder head bolts 11 through 15 to 20 Nm (15 ft. lbs.).
10. Using the sequence shown, tighten the cylinder head bolts 1 through 10 to 54 Nm (40 ft. lbs.).
11. Using the sequence shown, tighten the cylinder head bolts 11 through 15 to 20 Nm (15 ft. lbs.).
12. Using the sequence shown, rotate the cylinder head bolts 1 through 10 an additional 90° turn.
13. Using the sequence shown, tighten the cylinder head bolts 11 through 15 to 34 Nm (25 ft. lbs.).





14. Install the push rods and rocker arm assemblies in their original position, using Pushrod Retainer (1) Valve Rocker Arm - Installation.
15. If Install the right cylinder head, position the engine oil dip stick tube and install the retaining nut at the exhaust manifold.





16. Position the cylinder head covers (1), using the sequence shown, tighten the retaining bolts to 8 Nm (70 in. lbs.).






CAUTION: Do not let the tensioner arm snap back to the freearm position, sever damage may occur to the tensioner.

17. Rotate the accessory drive belt tensioner (8) clockwise until it contacts the stop and install the accessory drive belt (2) onto the pulleys, then slowly release the tensioner.





18. Raise and support the vehicle Maintenance.
19. Position the catalytic converters (4) onto the exhaust manifold flanges, install the flange nuts (3) and tighten to 41 Nm (30 ft. lbs.).
20. Connect the oxygen sensor electrical connectors (2).





21. Position the belly pan and install the belly pan retainers (1).
22. Lower the vehicle.






NOTE: Install the intake manifold and throttle body as an assembly.

23. Install the intake manifold Intake Manifold - Installation.
24. Change the engine oil and oil filter .
25. Fill the cooling system with the specified type and amount of engine coolant Service and Repair.





26. Position the engine cover (2) and secure the retaining grommets onto the ball studs.





27. Connect the negative battery cable and tighten nut (1) to 5 Nm (45 in. lbs.).
28. Start the engine and check for leaks.
