Removal






REMOVAL





1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
2. Disconnect the right and left bank up stream oxygen sensors.
3. Raise and support the vehicle Maintenance.
4. Remove the complete exhaust system.
5. For AWD only, remove the transfer case BW 44-40 Transfer Case - Removal.
6. For RWD only, remove the rear propeller shaft Propeller Shaft - Removal.
7. Remove the starter from the transmission and set aside Starter - Removal.
8. Disconnect the manual park release cable (1) from the lever (2).





9. Remove the bolts (1) from the manual park release cable bracket (3) and set the bracket/cable (2, 3) aside.





10. The converter is attached with three sets of two bolts (1) 120° apart as shown.





11. Rotate the crankshaft in a clockwise direction for access, and through the starter opening, remove the six converter bolts (1).





12. Turn the locking mechanism lock (1) of the adapter plug connector (2) counter-clockwise to release the lock.





13. Remove the adapter plug connector (1) from the transmission.





14. Disconnect the wiring harness (1) from the transmission case.





15. Disconnect the transmission fluid cooler lines (1) at the fittings (2) by removing the clips (3).






CAUTION: When supporting or lifting the transmission at the oil pan the weight of the transmission must be distributed evenly on the lifting fixture. Failure to do so could damage the oil pan and transmission.

16. Raise the transmission slightly with a service jack (1) to relieve load on the crossmember.





17. Remove the bolts attaching the crossmember (1) to frame and remove the crossmember.
18. Remove the bolts (2) securing the rear support and cushion to the cross member and remove.





19. Remove the bell housing bolts (1) on the RH side.





20. Remove the bell housing bolts (1) on the LH side.






NOTE: RWD shown, AWD similar.

21. Remove all remaining bell housing bolts (1, 2) securing the transmission to the engine block.
22. Hold the torque converter in place during transmission removal.
23. Lower the transmission and remove the assembly from the vehicle.





24. For AWD only, remove the four rear transmission mount bolts (1) and rear transmission mount (4) from the transmission.
25. For AWD only, remove the adapter bracket bolts (3) and the adapter (2) from the transmission.





26. For AWD only, remove the seven extension housing bolts (1) and remove the extension housing (2).





27. For RWD only, remove the four transmission mount bolts (2) and the transmission mount (3).
28. For RWD only, remove the four adapter bracket bolts (1) and the adapter bracket (4).
