SUBJECT:
Camshaft Phaser Oil Control Valves Improperly Torqued

OVERVIEW:
This bulletin involves inspecting the right cylinder head camshaft phaser oil control valves for proper torque and if found to be loose, replace the engine.

MODELS:

2011 JS 200/200 Convertibles/Avenger

NOTE:
This bulletin applies only to a small number of vehicles equipped with 3.6L engine that were built between March 5, 2011 and April 1, 2011 (MDH 0305XX-0401XX).

DISCUSSION:
Suspect vehicles must have their right camshaft phaser oil control valves inspected for proper torque. Vehicles with oil control valves that are torqued properly can be sold.

Vehicles that have engines with loose oil control valves must have their engines replaced and the vehicle diverted to auction with full disclosure. Contact your local Business Center for information regarding diverting a vehicle to auction.

SYMPTOM/CONDITION:
This service action applies to specific unsold vehicles. If the vehicle appears on the suspect VIN list, the vehicle's engine must be inspected.

PARTS REQUIRED:

If either oil control valve is loose, the engine MUST be replaced. Contact STAR at 1-800-850-7827 to obtain a replacement engine. Once the engine has been replaced, the vehicle MUST BE DIVERTED TO AUCTION WITH FULL DISCLOSURE.

INSPECTION PROCEDURE:

1. Disconnect and isolate the negative battery cable.

2. Remove the right cylinder head cover. Refer to DealerCONNECT > TechCONNECT > 09-Engine, 3.6L > Cylinder head > COVER(S), Cylinder Head > Removal > Removal - Right Cylinder Head Cover for proper procedures.

3. Once the valve train is exposed, rotate the crankshaft clockwise by wrenching on the damper bolt until the two datum holes in the camshaft (Fig. 1) are pointing straight up.

4. Ensure that the number one piston is at TDC on the exhaust stroke. The right side camshaft phaser arrows should point away from each other and the scribe lines should be parallel to the valve cover sealing surface (Fig 2).

5. Verify that the oil control valve is set to the proper torque by securing the camshaft on the cast flats (Fig. 1) with an open end wrench and torquing the oil control valve to 150 Nm (110 ft.lbs.). Repeat on the other camshaft.

6. If the oil control valve was properly torqued, proceed to the next step. If either oil control valve is loose, the engine MUST be replaced. Proceed to the Repair Procedure.

7. Install the right cylinder head cover. Refer to DealerCONNECT > TechCONNECT > 09 - Engine, 3.6L > Cylinder head > COVER(S), Cylinder Head > Installation > Installation - Right Cylinder Head Cover for proper procedures.

8. Reconnect the battery negative cable.

REPAIR PROCEDURE:

1. Replace the complete engine. Refer to DealerCONNECT > TechCONNECT > 09 - Engine, 3.6L>Removal > REMOVAL/INSTALLATION - 3.6L ENGINE for information regarding proper removal and installation procedures.

NOTE:
Contact STAR at 1-800-850-7827 to obtain a replacement engine. Once the engine has been replaced, the vehicle MUST BE DIVERTED TO AUCTION WITH FULL DISCLOSURE. Contact your local Business Center for information regarding diverting a vehicle to auction.

POLICY:
