Seat Back Zipper Separation
OVERVIEW:
This bulletin involves procedures to use a zipper slide (cursor) to re-zip seat back and secure ends of the zipper to prevent future separation.
MODELS:
2008 (JS27) Sebring Convertible
NOTE:
This information applies to vehicles built prior to February 01, 2008 (MDHO201XX).
SYMPTOM/CONDITION:
The zipper that closes the seat back may unzip and separate. Due to zipper construction, (no stops at the ends or zipper slide) the technician may misinterpret this as a defective or broken zipper.
DIAGNOSIS:
If the Symptom/Condition present, perform the Repair Procedure.
PARTS REQUIRED:
NOTE:
P/N 68040831AA (Zipper Slide) is used as a special tool to unzip/zip the seat back cover. This part should be kept by the technician to repair multiple vehicles for the condition described in this bulletin or for any operation that would require seat back cover removal/installation.
REPAIR PROCEDURE:
1. Move the seat to the forward position.
2. Disconnect the J-Clip retainer across the bottom of the seat back cover.
3. Peel the zipper apart up to the dump latch trim cover.
4. Fold the cover open to expose the inner plastic panel behind the seat back cover.
NOTE:
Pay attention to the position of the upper outboard corner of the panel for proper reinstallation later.
5. Remove the 2 torx screws that attach the inner plastic panel to the seat frame and remove the panel.
6. Pull the top end of the zipper out from behind the dump latch trim.
7. If the zipper is sewn at the top, carefully snip and remove all of the threads sewn to retain zipper teeth (Fig 1).
8. Using the zipper slide (cursor) p/n 68040831AA, load it onto the zipper starting at the top, with the flat (open end) facing up as shown in (Fig 2).
9. After loading the zipper slide onto the zipper (onto teeth), gently pull the zipper down about 4 - 5 Inches (10 - 13 mm) (Fig 3).
NOTE:
The zipper slide must be orientated as shown or the zipper will not zip back together during reassembly.
10. Using a common office stapler, staple the top of the zipper two times approximately 1 - 2 In (25 - 50 mm) ABOVE the bottom of the dumplatch trim to prevent separation (Fig. 4)
11. Tuck the top end of the zipper under the dump latch trim.
12. Install the inner plastic panel to the seat frame. Pay attention to the upper outboard corner for proper position. Install the two torx screws.
NOTE:
If the upper corner is not inserted properly, a crease, pucker or unsmooth appearance will occur in the seat cover at that corner.
13. Zip the seat back cover together and remove the zipper slide (cursor).
NOTE:
Keep the slide for future repairs associated with the seat back cover.
14. Staple the bottom of the zipper to prevent separation.
15. Install the rear lower section of seat back cover over its attachment.
16. Check the other seat back cover zipper for separation at the bottom. Is zipper separating at the bottom?
a. Yes >>> Repeat the Repair Procedure for the other seat starting with
b. No >>> Continue with
17. On the seat that is NOT separated, disconnect the J-Clip retainer across the bottom of the seat back cover.
18. Staple the bottom of the zipper to prevent separation.
19. Install the rear lower section of seat back cover over its attachment.
