Interior - Quarter Trim Flipper Door Popping/Clicking

NUMBER: 23-021-07

GROUP: Body

DATE: June 6, 2007

SUBJECT:
Quarter Trim Flipper Door - Popping/Clicking Sound When Operating Convertible Top

OVERVIEW:
This bulletin involves diagnosing and replacing the quarter trim flipper assembly with an improved part.

MODELS:

2008 (JS27) Sebring Convertible

NOTE:
This information applies to retractable hard and soft top models built through May 24, 2007 (MDH0524XX)

SYMPTOM/CONDITION:
Some customers may experience popping or clicking sounds coming from the rear quarter trim area when operating the convertible top. Further investigation may find the flipper door stuck inside the quarter trim, broken or off its track.

DIAGNOSIS:

Inspect the quarter trim flipper door (Fig. 1). If it is off its track, stuck or broken, perform the

Repair Procedure.

PARTS REQUIRED:

NOTE:
The appropriate trim color code must be placed in the TRM area of the part number. BD1 = Light Greystone, XDB = Light Slate Grey, and XT1 = Cream.

REPAIR PROCEDURE:

NOTE:
Both Right and Left sides should be repaired at the same time.

1. Following the procedures in DealerCONNECT > TechCONNECT remove the right and left quarter trim panels.

2. Flip the panel over and inspect the 4 to 5 welds that attach the inner reinforcement to the quarter trim at the upper outboard edge (Fig. 2). If any of the welds are broken, the quarter trim panel must be replaced before proceeding with the flipper door repair.

3. Remove the 4 screws that attach the flipper door assembly to the inner reinforcement. Discard the assembly.

4. Insert the new flipper door assembly into the panel and install the 4 screws loosely to allow alignment/adjustment.

5. Lay the panel on its side and align the door to the trim panel (Fig 3). Once the door is aligned, tighten the screws in the following order: 1 - Forward fastener, 2 - Rear Inboard fastener, 3 - Rear Outboard fastener, then 4 - Mid fastener (Fig 4).

6. To maximize flipper door pin engagement in the track, carefully loosen the two Rear screws while squeezing the rails together. Tighten the two Rear screws. Recheck door alignment as shown in (Fig. 3). A gauge can be made from a small wooden dowel or pencil. The spacing between the track rails (where pins for door ride) should measure 78.7 mm (3.10 in)

NOTE:
The dimension between the rails are critical for correct door operation.

1. Manually operate the flipper door to check for smooth operation. If the door binds in the track, repeat step 6.

2. Operate the door its full travel, if the corner of the door contacts the inner reinforcement, the reinforcement cut tab can be deflected upward with pliers to allow additional clearance. Early models may not have the cut tab in the reinforcement panel. If the trim that you are working does not have the tab, make modifications as shown (Fig. 5).

3. Repeat the procedures on the opposite side and reassemble the quarter trim panels back into the vehicle following the procedures outlined in DeaIerCONNECT > TechCONNECT.

4. Verify proper top operation prior to returning the vehicle to the owner.

POLICY:
Reimbursable within the provisions of the warranty.
