THIS BULLETIN SUPERSEDES TECHNICAL SERVICE BULLETIN 21-015-08 REV. A, DATED JULY 11, 2008, WHICH SHOULD BE REMOVED FROM YOUR FILES. ALL REVISIONS ARE HIGHLIGHTED WITH **ASTERISKS** AND INCLUDE THE ADDITION OF THE 2007 AND EARLY 2008 JS MODEL.

THE StarSCAN(R) FLASH FILES FOR THIS BULLETIN MUST BE RETRIEVED FROM THE INTERNET.

StarSCAN(R) SOFTWARE LEVEL MUST BE AT RELEASE 9.01 OR HIGHER.

StarMOBILE DESKTOP CLIENT -OR- StarMOBILE STANDALONE MODE MAY ALSO BE USED TO PERFORM THE FLASH.

SUBJECT:
Flash: Transmission Engagement I Performance Improvements

OVERVIEW:
This bulletin involves selectively erasing and reprogramming the Powertrain Control Module (PCM).

MODELS:

**2007 - 2008** (JS41) Avenger/Sebring

**2007 - 2008** (JS27) Sebring Convertible

2008 (J1) Avenger/Sebring (China Market)

2009 (JC) Journey

NOTE:
This Bulletin applies to:

a. JS models equipped with a 2.4L NON PZEV Engine & Automatic Transmission (Sales Code ED3 with DFF) built ** before June 19, 2008 (MDH0619XX)**.

b. JS models equipped with a 2.4L PZEV Engine & Automatic Transmission (Sales Code EDG with DFF) built **before June 19, 2008 (MDH0619XX)**.

c. China J1 models equipped with a 2.0L or 2.4L Engine & Automatic Transmission (Sales Code ECN/ED3 with DFF) built prior to April 23, 2008 (MDH 0423XX).

d. JC models equipped with a 2.4L Engine and Automatic Transmission (Sales Code ED3 with DFF) built between January 7, 2008 and July 21, 2008 (MDHO107XX > MDH0721XX).

SYMPTOM/CONDITION:
Some customers may experience transmission shift or performance concerns as follows:

1. Intermittent delayed transmission engagement into Drive from initial engine start.

a. This may be described as no engagement or in some cases harsh engagement if the engine RPM is increased when drive engagement occurs. Further investigation by the technician may find the Clutch Volume Index learned extremely high.

2. Harsh 2 - 1 Coast Down shifts.

3. 1 - 2 Upshift consistency, quality or smoothness.

DIAGNOSIS:
Using a Scan Tool (StarSCAN(R)) with the appropriate Diagnostic Procedures available in TechCONNECT, verify all engine systems are functioning as designed. If DTC's are present record them on the repair order and repair as necessary before proceeding further with this bulletin.

If the above symptom/condition is experienced or can be verified, perform the Repair Procedure.

REPAIR PROCEDURE - USING THE INTERNET TO RETRIEVE THE FLASH FILE:

NOTE:
If this flash process is interrupted/aborted, the flash should be restarted.

1. Reprogram the PCM with the latest software. Follow the detailed service procedures available in DealerCONNECT/TechCONNECT, Refer To Group 8 - Electrical > Electronic Control Modules - Service Information > Module - Powertrain Control > Standard Procedures > PCM/ECM Programming - Gas.

2. Perform the Quick Learn function, found in the StarSCAN(R) Misc Function Menu.

3. Type the necessary information on the "Authorized Modification Label" and attach it near the VECI label.
