Inner Tie Rod
INNER TIE ROD
1. Remove outer tie rod. Tie Rod End - Removal
2. Remove tie rod jam nut from inner tie rod.
3. On vehicles equipped with 4.0L engine, if servicing right inner tie rod, perform the following:
a. Remove mounting screws (2) securing heat shield (1) in front of steering gear.
b. Wiggle heat shield (1) left and right in an attempt to dislodge rear mounting rivet from right stabilizer bar cushion retainer. If rivet releases easily, remove heat shield from vehicle and drill out rivet. If rivet does not release easily, do not damage heat shield in an attempt to remove it. Remove right stabilizer bar cushion retainer mounting bolts, then remove heat shield with right stabilizer bar cushion retainer attached.
4. Remove clamp (4) securing bellows (1) to inner tie rod.
5. Remove clamp (3) securing bellows (1) to transfer tube.
6. Remove clamp (2) securing bellows (1) to steering gear body.
7. Remove bellows.
8. Remove travel restrictor (3) from inner tie rod (1).
9. Install appropriate inner tie rod removal tool on inner tie rod (1) hex.
CAUTION: If inner tie rod cannot be removed using specified tools, do not use a hammer or heat to loosen. Damage to steering gear will occur. Replace entire steering gear.
10. Unthread and remove inner tie rod (1) from steering gear (2).
