Inner Tie Rod







INNER TIE ROD





1. Install travel restrictor (1), flat side of teeth (2) facing out, on inboard end of inner tie rod ball joint.
2. Apply Mopar(R) Lock & Seal Adhesive or equivalent medium thread locker adhesive to inboard end threads of inner tie rod.




3. Install inner tie rod (1) onto gear (2) using appropriate inner tie rod installer tool or crows foot wrench on hex. Tighten inner tie rod to 78 Nm, (58 ft. lbs.).
4. Place new transfer tube clamp over transfer tube past where bellows will mount.
5. Loosely place new clamp over large end of bellows.
6. Slide new bellows with clamp over end of inner tie rod and onto gear body and transfer tube.




7. Push small end of bellows (2) past groove (1) machined into inner tie rod.
8. Apply a small amount of Mopar(R) Lubriplate or equivalent uniformly to groove (1) in inner tie rod shaft. This allows for toe adjustment without twisting bellows.
9. Pull small end of bellows outward until ridge inside bellows engages groove.




10. Install new clamp (4) over small end of bellows (1).
11. Install clamp (3) securing bellows to transfer tube.




12. Using crimping pliers (1), crimp clamp securing bellows to gear body.




13. On vehicles equipped with 4.0L engine, if servicing right inner tie rod and heat shield is still riveted to stabilizer bar cushion retainer , install right stabilizer bar cushion retainer with heat shield over stabilizer bar cushion and shield over steering gear. Install cushion retainer mounting bolts and tighten to 54 Nm (40 ft. lbs.).




14. On vehicles equipped with 4.0L engine, if servicing right inner tie rod and heat shield has been removed from stabilizer bar cushion retainer , position heat shield (1) over steering gear and install mounting screws (2) securing heat shield (1) in front of steering gear. Do Not tighten at this time.




15. On vehicles equipped with 4.0L engine, if servicing right inner tie rod and heat shield has been removed from stabilizer bar cushion retainer , position mounting hole in rear of heat shield above mounting hole in right stabilizer bar cushion retainer and install a 3/16" x 1/8" rivet securing heat shield to stabilizer bar cushion retainer.




16. On vehicles equipped with 4.0L engine, if servicing right inner tie rod, tighten heat shield mounting screws in front of steering gear to 4 Nm (35 in. lbs.).
17. Thread tie rod jam nut onto inner tie rod far enough to install outer tie rod.
