A/C - Intermittent Vibration/Rattle/Knock With A/C ON

SUBJECT:
Intermittent Vibration I Rattle Sound from Engine Compartment with A/C On

OVERVIEW:
This bulletin involves inspecting the A/C compressor for loose or improperly seated fasteners and performing the repair procedure if found loose.

MODELS:

2007 - 2008 (CS) Pacifica

NOTE:
This information applies to models equipped with a 4.0L engine (Sales Code EGQ)

SYMPTOM/CONDITION:
Some vehicles may exhibit an intermittent engine compartment vibration, rattle, or knock when the A/C compressor is engaged. The condition can occur at any engine RPM.

DIAGNOSIS:
Attempt to verify the condition by operating the engine through a wide RPM range with the A/C set to "On" at the lowest temperature setting. Listen for unusual sounds from the engine compartment when the compressor is engaged. If the condition cannot be verified, inspect the compressor fasteners for looseness and or small gaps (1 mm to 2 mm) between any of the 3 compressor mounts and engine mounting bosses. No clearance should exist between any of the compressor and engine mounting bosses. If fastener looseness / mount gaps or unusual sounds are noted perform the Repair Procedure.

NOTE:
If compressor fastener looseness is not found, further diagnosis will be required.

REPAIR PROCEDURE:

1. Following the procedures in DealerCONNECT > TechCONNECT remove the accessory drive belt from the compressor pulley.

2. Loosen the 3 compressor mounting fasteners (2 front nuts / 1 rear bolt).

NOTE:
Hold the compressor against the engine mounting bosses while performing the following tightening sequence.

3. Tighten the fasteners to 28 Nm (250 in lbs.) in the following order:

a. Front upper nut.

b. Front lower nut.

c. Rear bolt.

4. Following the procedures in DealerCONNECT > TechCONNECT reinstall the accessory drive belt.
