A/C Compressor - Removal
4.0L ENGINE
WARNING: Refer to the applicable warnings and cautions for this system before performing the following operation Warning and Caution. Failure to follow the warnings and cautions could result in possible personal injury or death.
NOTE: The A/C compressor may be removed and repositioned without disconnecting the refrigerant lines or discharging the refrigerant system. Discharging is not necessary if servicing the compressor clutch, clutch field coil or engine.
NOTE: If an internal failure of the A/C compressor has occurred, the desiccant and filter assembly within the A/C receiver/drier must be replaced.
1. Recover the refrigerant from the refrigerant system Refrigerant System Recovery.
2. Disconnect and isolate the negative battery cable.
3. Raise and support the vehicle.
4. Remove the accessory drive splash shield Accessory Drive Splash Shield - Removal Front Wheelhouse Splash Shield - Removal.
5. Remove the accessory drive belt.
6. Reach up between the bottom of the front fascia and the front of the lower engine cradle and remove the nuts (2 and 4) that secure the A/C suction line (1) and A/C discharge line (5) to the A/C compressor (3).
7. Disconnect the A/C suction and discharge lines from the A/C compressor and remove and discard the O-ring seals and gaskets.
8. Install plugs in, or tape over the opened refrigerant line fittings and compressor ports.
9. Disconnect the engine wire harness connector (1) from the field coil connector located on the top of the A/C compressor (5).
NOTE: To remove the A/C compressor, the two front mounting studs must be first completely loosened from the engine and then removed along with the compressor as an assembly.
10. Remove the two nuts (4) and completely loosen the two studs (3) that secure the front of the A/C compressor to the engine.
11. Support the A/C compressor and remove the bolt (2) that secures the rear of the A/C compressor to the engine.
12. Remove the A/C compressor along with the two studs from the engine compartment together as an assembly.
13. Remove the two studs from the mounting bosses located at the front of the A/C compressor.
