B197B-POWER LIFTGATE OPEN DIRECTION - PAWL SWITCH PERFORMANCE

- When Monitored:
Whenever the power liftgate is performing an opening operation.
- Set Condition:
The pawl switch was not detected as returning to ground after a latch release operation.
Diagnostic Test
1. DTC PRESENT
With the scan tool, record and erase DTC's.
Turn the ignition off, wait 10 seconds, then turn the ignition on.
Operate the power liftgate several times if possible.
With the scan tool, read ACTIVE DTCs.
Does the scan tool display B197B-POWER LIFTGATE OPEN DIRECTION - PAWL SWITCH PERFORMANCE?
Yes
- Go To 2
No
- Using the wiring diagram/schematic as a guide, inspect the wiring and connectors for an intermittent condition. Operate the door several times and check for any binding or other obstructions.
- PERFORM BODY VERIFICATION TEST - VER 1. Body Verification Test
2. BINDING LIFTGATE
Examine the liftgate for proper fit and alignment, loose/hard or torn seals, misaligned latch striker or anything that would cause an obstruction to proper operation.
Manually operate the liftgate of a known good vehicle and notice the effort needed to open and close.
Compare the effort needed on the disabled liftgate.
Especially notice the effort needed to unlatch and close the liftgate.
Does it take more effort to operate the liftgate than it should?
Yes
- Repair accordingly.
- PERFORM BODY VERIFICATION TEST - VER 1. Body Verification Test
No
- Go To 3
3. (Q60) LIFTGATE PAWL SWITCH SENSE SHORT TO VOLTAGE
Disconnect the Liftgate Cinch/Release Motor harness connector.
Turn the ignition on.
Measure the voltage between the (Q901) Logic Ground circuit and the (Q60) Liftgate Pawl Switch Sense circuit in the Liftgate Cinch/Release Motor connector.
Wiggle the harness while observing the voltmeter.
Is there any voltage present?
No
- Go To 4
Yes
- Repair the (Q60) Liftgate Pawl Switch Sense circuit for a short to voltage.
- PERFORM BODY VERIFICATION TEST - VER 1. Body Verification Test
4. (Q901) LOGIC GROUND WIRE OPEN
Turn the ignition off.
Disconnect the Power Liftgate Module C2 harness connector.
Measure the resistance of the (Q901) Logic Ground circuit between the PLG Module C2 harness connector and the Liftgate Cinch/Release Motor harness connector.
Wiggle the harness while observing the ohmmeter.
Is the resistance below 2.0 ohms?
Yes
- Go To 5
No
- Repair the (Q901) Logic Ground wire for an open.
- PERFORM BODY VERIFICATION TEST - VER 1. Body Verification Test
5. (Q60) LIFTGATE PAWL SWITCH SENSE WIRE OPEN
Measure the resistance of the (Q60) Liftgate Pawl Switch Sense wire between the PLG Module C2 harness connector and the Liftgate Cinch/Release Motor harness connector.
Wiggle the harness while observing the ohmmeter.
Is the resistance below 2.0 ohms?
Yes
- Go To 6
No
- Repair the (Q60) Liftgate Pawl Switch Sense wire for an open.
- PERFORM BODY VERIFICATION TEST - VER 1. Body Verification Test
6. (Q83) LIFTGATE LATCH CLUTCH DRIVER CIRCUIT OPEN
Measure the resistance of the (Q83) Liftgate Latch Clutch Driver circuit between the PLG Module C2 harness connector and the Liftgate Cinch/Release Motor harness connector.
Is the resistance below 2.0 ohms?
Yes
- Go To 7
No
- Repair the (Q83) Liftgate Latch Clutch Driver circuit for an open.
- PERFORM BODY VERIFICATION TEST - VER 1. Body Verification Test
7. (Z245) GROUND CIRCUIT OPEN
Turn the ignition off.
Measure the resistance between ground and the (Z245) Ground circuit.
Is the resistance below 5.0 ohms?
No
- Repair the (Z245) Ground circuit for an open.
- PERFORM BODY VERIFICATION TEST - VER 1. Body Verification Test
Yes
- Go To 8
8. (Q83) LIFTGATE LATCH CLUTCH DRIVER CIRCUIT SHORT TO GROUND
Measure the resistance between ground and the (Q83) Liftgate Latch Clutch Driver circuit.
Is the resistance below 5.0 ohms?
No
- Go To 9
Yes
- Repair the (Q83) Liftgate Latch Clutch Driver circuit for a short to ground.
- PERFORM BODY VERIFICATION TEST - VER 1. Body Verification Test
9. (Q83) LIFTGATE LATCH CLUTCH DRIVER WIRE SHORT TO THE (Q901) GROUND WIRE.
Measure the resistance of the (Q83) liftgate Latch Clutch Driver circuit to the (Q901) Ground circuit in the PLG Module C2 harness connector.
Is the resistance below 100K ohms
Yes
- Repair the (Q83) Liftgate Latch Clutch Driver wire for a short to the (Q901) ground circuit.
- PERFORM BODY VERIFICATION TEST - VER 1. Body Verification Test
No
- Go To 10
- PERFORM BODY VERIFICATION TEST - VER 1. Body Verification Test
10. (Q83) LIFTGATE LATCH CLUTCH DRIVER CIRCUIT SHORT TO VOLTAGE
Turn the ignition on
Measure the voltage between ground and the (Q83) liftgate Latch Clutch Driver circuit.
Is there any voltage present?
Yes
- Repair the (Q83) Liftgate Latch Clutch Driver wire for a short to voltage.
- PERFORM BODY VERIFICATION TEST - VER 1. Body Verification Test
No
- Go To 11
11. (Q85) LIFTGATE LATCH RELEASE DRIVER CIRCUIT SHORT TO GROUND
Turn the ignition off.
Measure the resistance between ground and the (Q85) Liftgate Latch Release Driver circuit in the PLG Module C2 harness connector.
Wiggle the harness and check for an intermittent short circuit condition.
Is the resistance below 10000.0 ohms?
Yes
- Repair the (Q85) Liftgate Latch Release Driver circuit for a short to ground.
- PERFORM BODY VERIFICATION TEST - VER 1. Body Verification Test
No
- Go To 11
12. (Q85) LIFTGATE LATCH RELEASE DRIVER CIRCUIT SHORT TO VOLTAGE
Turn the ignition on
Measure the voltage of the (Q85) Liftgate Latch Release Driver circuit in the PLG Module C2 harness connector.
Wiggle the harness and check for an intermittent short circuit condition.
Is there any voltage present?
Yes
- Repair the (Q85) Liftgate Latch Release Driver circuit for a short to voltage.
- PERFORM BODY VERIFICATION TEST - VER 1. Body Verification Test
No
- Go To 13
13. (Q84) LIFTGATE LATCH CINCH DRIVER CIRCUIT SHORT TO GROUND
Turn the ignition off.
Measure the resistance between ground and the (Q84) Liftgate Latch Cinch Driver circuit.
Wiggle the harness and check for an intermittent short condition.
Is the resistance below 1000.0 ohms?
No
- Go To 14
Yes
- Repair the (Q84) Liftgate Latch Cinch Driver wire for a short to ground.
- PERFORM BODY VERIFICATION TEST - VER 1. Body Verification Test
14. (Q84) LIFTGATE LATCH CINCH DRIVER WIRE SHORT TO VOLTAGE
Turn the ignition on.
Measure the voltage between the (Q84) Liftgate Latch Cinch Driver circuit and ground.
Is there any voltage present?
No
- Go To 15
- PERFORM BODY VERIFICATION TEST - VER 1. Body Verification Test
Yes
- Repair the (Q84) Liftgate Latch Cinch Driver wire for a short to voltage.
- PERFORM BODY VERIFICATION TEST - VER 1. Body Verification Test
15. CHECK THE POWER LIFTGATE LATCH CINCH DRIVER
Turn the ignition off.
Reconnect the Power Liftgate Module C2 harness connector.
Turn the ignition on.
While using the scan tool to actuate the Power Liftgate Latch Cinch motor, measure the voltage between the (Q84) Liftgate Latch Cinch Driver circuit and ground.
Is the voltage above 12 volts?
No
- Replace the Power Liftgate Module.
- PERFORM BODY VERIFICATION TEST - VER 1. Body Verification Test
Yes
- Go To 16
16. CHECK THE POWER LIFTGATE LATCH RELEASE DRIVER
Turn the ignition on
While using the scan tool to actuate the Power Liftgate Latch Release Motor, measure the voltage between the (Q85) Liftgate Latch Release Driver circuit and ground.
Is the voltage above 12 volts?
No
- Replace the Power Liftgate Module.
- PERFORM BODY VERIFICATION TEST - VER 1. Body Verification Test
Yes
- Replace the Liftgate Cinch/Release Motor Assembly.
- PERFORM BODY VERIFICATION TEST - VER 1. Body Verification Test
