TORQUE

CYLINDER HEAD TORQUE AND SEQUENCE

1. The cylinder head bolts are torqued using the torque-angle method, they should be examined BEFORE reuse. If the threads are necked down, the bolts must be replaced.
2. Necking can be checked by holding a scale or straight edge against the threads. If all the threads do not contact the scale the bolt should be replaced.

3. Tighten the cylinder head bolts 1 - 8 in the sequence shown. Following the 4 step tightening method:
- Step 1: Bolts 1 - 8 to 61 Nm (45 ft. lbs.).
- Step 2: Bolts 1 - 8 to 88 Nm (65 ft. lbs.).
- Step 3: Bolts 1 - 8 (again) to 88 Nm (65 ft. lbs.).
- Step 4: Bolts 1 - 8 turn an additional 120°. (Do not use a torque wrench for this step.)

NOTE: Bolt torque after 120° turn should be over 122 Nm (90 ft. lbs.). If not, replace the bolt.

INTAKE MANIFOLD TORQUE AND SEQUENCE

1. Carefully install the new intake manifold gasket. Tighten end seal retainer screws to 12 Nm (105 in.lbs.).
2. Install lower intake manifold. Install the bolts and torque to 1 Nm (10 in lbs.). Then torque bolts to 22 Nm (200 in.lbs.) in sequence shown. Then torque again to 22 Nm (200 in.lbs.). After intake manifold is in place, inspect to make sure seals are in place.

MAIN BEARING CAP TORQUE AND SEQUENCE

1. Inspect main cap bolts for stretching. Replace bolts that are stretched.

NOTE: The main cap bolts should be examined before reuse. Bolt stretch can be checked by holding a scale or straight edge against the threads (2). If all the threads do not contact the scale (2) the bolt must be replaced.

2. Install the main bearing caps (1,2,3,5) and bolts (4). Tighten bolts to 41 Nm (30 ft. lbs.) plus 1/4 turn.

CONNECTING ROD TORQUE

Install connecting rod bolts and tighten to 7 Nm (5 ft. lbs) initially. Tighten the bolts an additional 21 Nm (15 ft. lbs.) and then turn each bolt 90° to final clamping load.

HARMONIC BALANCER TORQUE

Install vibration damper bolt. Torque bolt to 54 Nm (40 ft. lbs.).

FLEX PLATE TORQUE

Install flex plate bolts (2). Tighten bolts to 95 Nm (70 ft. lbs.).

OIL PUMP COVER TORQUE

Install cover and tighten screws to 12 Nm (105 in. lbs.).

EXHAUST MANIFOLD TORQUE

NOTE: New manifold to cylinder head fasteners are recommended.

1. Position exhaust manifold (5) on cylinder head and install bolts to center runner (cylinder #3) and initial tighten to 2.8 Nm (25 in. lbs.).

NOTE: Inspect crossover pipe fasteners for damage from heat and corrosion. The cross-over bolts are made of a special stainless steel alloy. If replacement is required, OEM bolts are highly recommended.

2. Using a new gasket, attach crossover pipe to exhaust manifold and tighten bolts (2) to 41 Nm (30 ft. lbs.).
3. Install the remaining manifold attaching bolts. Tighten all bolts to 28 Nm (250 in. lbs.).

WATER PUMP TORQUE

Install water pump and pulley to the timing chain case cover. Tighten water pump bolts to 12 Nm (105 in. lbs.).
