A/C Compressor - Removal







3.8L ENGINE

WARNING: Refer to the applicable warnings and cautions for this system before performing the following operation Warning and Caution. Failure to follow the warnings and cautions could result in possible personal injury or death.

NOTE: The A/C compressor may be removed and repositioned without disconnecting the refrigerant lines or discharging the refrigerant system. Discharging is not necessary if servicing the compressor clutch, clutch field coil or engine.

NOTE: If an internal failure of the A/C compressor has occurred, the desiccant and filter assembly within the A/C receiver/drier must be replaced.





1. Recover the refrigerant from the refrigerant system Refrigerant System Recovery.
2. Disconnect and isolate the negative battery cable.
3. Remove the radiator fan Radiator Fan - Removal.
4. Remove the nuts (2 and 4) that secure the A/C suction line (1) and A/C discharge line (5) to the A/C compressor (3).
5. Disconnect the A/C suction and discharge lines from the A/C compressor and remove and discard the O-ring seals and gaskets.
6. Install plugs in, or tape over the opened refrigerant line fittings and compressor ports.




7. Remove the accessory drive belt.
8. Disconnect the engine wire harness connector (1) from the field coil connector located on the top of the A/C compressor (4).
9. Remove the engine wire harness from the wiring bracket located near the front of the A/C compressor.
10. Support the A/C compressor and remove the two upper retaining bolts (2) that secure the A/C compressor and the engine wire harness bracket (3) to the engine.
11. Raise and support the vehicle.
12. Remove the accessory drive splash shield Accessory Drive Splash Shield - Removal Front Wheelhouse Splash Shield - Removal.
13. Remove the two lower retaining bolts that secure the A/C compressor to the engine and remove and compressor.
