Rough Idle, MIL Illumination, DTC P0303
OVERVIEW:
This bulletin involves diagnosing and replacing the right (rear) cylinder head, if necessary.
MODELS:
2006 (JR) Sebring/Stratus Sedan/Sebring Convertible
2006 (LX) 300/Charger/Magnum
NOTE:
This bulletin may apply to vehicles equipped with a 2.7L engine (sales code EEE or EER), with an engine build date on or after December 2, 2005 through and including December 12, 2005 (Fig. 1). The engine build label is located on the front side of the left (front) valve cover.
SYMPTOM/CONDITION:
The customer may experience the engine running rough while at idle with MIL illumination.
The technician may find the following Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC):
^ P0303-Cylinder No. 3 Misfire
DIAGNOSIS:
1. Using the scan tool (DRBIII(R) or StarSCAN(R)), check for DTC's. Is DTC P0303-Cylinder No. 3 Misfire present?
a. Yes >> JR vehicles proceed to Step # 2. LX vehicles proceed to Step # 3.
b. No >> STOP. This bulletin does not apply. Further diagnosis is necessary.
2. Using the DRBIII(R), check the misfire counter for # 3 cylinder as follows:
a. DRBIII Standalone
b. 1998-2006 Diagnostics
c. All
d. Engine
e. OBDII Monitors
f. Which Cyl Is Mis-Firing
g. Record the misfire counts for # 3 cylinder on the repair order.
h. Proceed to Step # 4.
3. Using the StarSCAN(R), check the misfire counter for # 3 cylinder.
a. ECU View
b. PCM
c. More Options
d. OBDII Monitors
e. Which Cyl Is Mis-Firing
f. Record the misfire counts for # 3 cylinder on the repair order.
g. Proceed to Step # 4.
4. Is # 3 cylinder misfire counter 2 or higher?
a. Yes >> perform Repair Procedure.
b. No >> STOP - This bulletin does not apply. Further diagnosis is necessary.
PARTS REQUIRED:
SPECIAL TOOLS/EQUIPMENT REQUIRED:
REPAIR PROCEDURE:
1. Remove the right/rear cylinder head. Refer to the detailed service information available in TechCONNECT, under: Service Info, 9-Engine, Cylinder Head, Removal.
2. Remove the intake and exhaust valves from the right/rear cylinder head. Refer to the detailed service information available in TechCONNECT, under: Service Info, 9-Engine, Cylinder Head, Intake/Exhaust Valves & Seats, Removal.
3. Inspect both intake valves removed from cylinder # 3. Is either intake valve burned?
a. Yes >> replace both intake valves with p/n 04663899 and proceed to the next step.
b. No >> proceed to the next step.
4. Install the intake and exhaust valves into the new right/rear cylinder head, p/n 04663978AD. Refer to the detailed service information available in TechCONNECT, under: Service Info, 9-Engine, Cylinder Head, Intake/Exhaust Valves & Seats, Cleaning and Installation.
5. Prepare the engine block to cylinder head sealing surface on the engine block. Refer to the detailed service information available in TechCONNECT, under: Service Info, 9-Engine, Cylinder Head, Cleaning.
6. Install the right/rear cylinder head. Refer to the detailed service information available in TechCONNECT, under: Service Info, 9-Engine, Cylinder Head, Installation.
