40TE AUTOMATIC TRANSAXLEGEAR SHIFT CABLE
REMOVAL
(1) Place transaxle in PARK.
(2) Disconnect battery negative cable at left strut tower.
(3) Remove air cleaner assembly.

(4) Using a pry tool, pry up on cable (2) (Fig. 201) at manual valve lever (4) and remove cable from lever.
(5) Remove the screw (1) from the cable bracket at the transaxle.

(6) Remove the gearshift knob set screw (2) (Fig. 202) and knob (1).

(7) Remove gearshift bezel (2) (Fig. 203). Disconnect range indicator lamp connector (3).

(8) Remove center console assembly (1) (Fig. 204).

(9) Loosen nut on shift cable adjust lever (Fig. 205).

(10) Using a flat blade pry tool, remove the shifter cable core end from the shift lever pin (Fig. 206).
(11) Using a flat blade pry tool, pry the cable conduit clip up from the shifter bracket. Pull up on the cable conduit and remove from bracket (Fig. 206).
(12) Raise vehicle on hoist.

(13) Remove the cable grommet (3) from the floor pan area (Fig. 207).
(14) Carefully remove the cable (1) from the underbody by unfolding the cable retainer clip (2) as you go along.
INSTALLATION

(1) Install cable assembly. into floor pan tunnel hole and secure grommet (3) (Fig. 208). If necessary, use a synthetic based lubricant to aid in grommet installation.
(2) Position cable into retainer (2) clip and tighten clip to secure cable. Route cable (1) up towards transaxle shift lever.
(3) Lower vehicle.

(4) Install cable (2) (Fig. 209) to transaxle (3) and tighten screw (1) to 14 Nm (125 inch lbs.).
(5) Install cable to transaxle shift lever (4).

(6) Connect cable (2) (Fig. 210) to shifter conduit bracket (3) and shift pin (4). Install cable retaining clip (1).

(7) Verify transaxle shift lever and floor shifter lever are in the PARK position. (Fig. 211)
(8) Tighten cable adjuster nut to 23 Nm (200 inch lbs.).

(9) Install center console assembly (1) (Fig. 212).

(10) Install gearshift bezel (2) (Fig. 213).
Fig.214 Gearshift Knob:
(11) Install gearshift knob (1) (Fig. 214) and tighten set screw (2) to 2 Nm (20 inch lbs.).
(12) Verify proper cable adjustment. Engine starter should only engage in PARK and NEUTRAL gear shifter positions.
