STEERING WHEEL AND SHAFT ASSEMBLYREMOVAL AND INSTALLATION
WARNING:
^ Before removing the air bag module, refer to Service Precautions and Air Bag Module and Clock Spring.
^ When removing and installing the steering wheel, do not let it bump against the air bag module.
REMOVAL SERVICE POINTS
<> STEERING WHEEL REMOVAL
CAUTION: Do not hammer on the steering wheel to remove it; doing so will damage the collapsible mechanism.
Use special tool MB990803 to remove the steering wheel.
<> STEERING SHAFT ASSEMBLY REMOVAL
CAUTION: The tilt lever should be held in the lock position until the steering shaft assembly is installed to the vehicle. If the steering shaft assembly is removed with the tilt lever released, or the tilt lever is released after the steering shaft assembly was removed from the vehicle, the steering column can not be reinstalled correctly. If the steering column is installed incorrectly, the collision energy absorbing mechanism may be damaged.
Ensure that the tilt lever is in the lock position, and remove the steering shaft mounting bolts.
INSTALLATION SERVICE POINTS
>>A<< STEERING SHAFT ASSEMBLY INSTALLATION
CAUTION: Do not release the tilt lever until the steering column shaft assembly has been installed.
Ensure that the tilt lever is in the lock position, and install the steering shaft assembly. Tighten the four bolts in the order shown by hand, and then tighten them to the specified torque in the order shown.
Tightening torque: 12 ± 2 Nm (100 ± 22 inch lbs.)
1. Do not release the tilt lever until the steering shaft assembly has been installed.
2. Remove the fixing band after the installation has been done. Ensure that the tilt lever is in the lock position, and install the steering shaft assembly. Tighten the four bolts in the order shown by hand, and then tighten them to the specified torque in the order shown.
Tightening torque: 12 ± 2 Nm (100 ± 22 inch lbs.)
CAUTION: Do not release the tilt lever until the steering shaft assembly has been installed.
Ensure that the tilt lever is in the lock position, and install the steering shaft assembly. Tighten the four bolts in the order shown by hand, and then tighten them to the specified torque in the order shown.

>>B<< STEERING COVER ASSEMBLY INSTALLATION
1. Mount steering cover assembly in the steering gear box securely at the groove, so that the clearance A (shown in the illustration at left) will be at the standard value.
Standard value (A): 0 - 0.5 mm (0 - 0.02 inch)
2. Before bolting, apply 3M Part number 8663 or equivalent to the mounting bolt holes of toeboard.
