NUMBER: 18-021-06GROUP: Vehicle Performance
DATE: June 22, 2006
THE DRBIII(R) FLASH FILES FOR THIS BULLETIN ARE AVAILABLE ON DealerCONNECT.
SUBJECT:
Flash: Freeze Frame Data Not Available For Diagnosis of Misfire Diagnostic Trouble
Codes P0300, P0301, P0302, P0303, P0304, P0305, P0306
OVERVIEW:
This bulletin involves reprogramming the Powertrain Control Module (PCM) with new software.
MODELS:
2005 (ST) Sebring/Stratus Coupe
SYMPTOM/CONDITION:
The vehicle operator may describe MIL illumination.
DIAGNOSIS:
Using a Scan Tool (DRBIII(R)) with PCMCIA card p/n CH8425 and the appropriate Diagnostic Procedures, verify all engine systems are functioning as designed. If DTC's are present, other than the ones listed below, record them on the repair order and repair as necessary before proceeding further with this bulletin.
NOTE:
Make sure the DRBIII(R) is operating with PCMCIA card pin CH8425. The card must be updated to version 5.1 to communicate with all model years of ST22.
The technician may discover that some freeze frame data items may be unavailable to diagnose the following Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTC's):
^ P0300-Random/Multiple Cylinder Misfire Detected
^ P0301-Cylinder 1 Misfire Detected
^ P0302-Cylinder 2 Misfire Detected
^ P0303-Cylinder 3 Misfire Detected
^ P0304-Cylinder 4 Misfire Detected
^ P0305-Cylinder 5 Misfire Detected
^ P0306-Cylinder 6 Misfire Detected
If the vehicle operator describes the Symptom/Condition with one or more of the listed DTC's present and the freeze frame data for the DTC(s) is unavailable, perform the Repair Procedure.

REPAIR PROCEDURE
NOTE:
When first operating a brand new S.R.T., error messages will occur before PCM/TCM software is loaded into memory ("Download Error Reconnect/Retry" - will be displayed on the screen). Software must be downloaded from TechTOOLS before the S.R.T. will be functional. This error will no longer display after the first download of vehicle software.
TechTOOLS TO S.R.T. SOFTWARE DOWNLOAD PROCEDURE
1. Open the hood and install a battery charger. Verify that the charging rate provides approximately 13.2 - 13.8 volts. Set the battery charger to continuous charge. Do not allow the charger to time out during the flash process. Remove the charger from the battery when the flash process is complete.
2. Using the DRBIII(R) w/CH8425 PCMCIA card with latest software, follow the path:
System Select > MFI and record the Part Number. This part number will be needed at a later point in this procedure to help identify the correct software to download from TechTOOLS. The S.R.T. flash reprogramming tool can also be used to ID the controller.
3. Log on to DealerCONNECT and navigate to TechTOOLS located within the Service tab.
4. Connect the S.R.T. to a vehicle using the vehicle interface cable (CH8432-2). The S.R.T. receives power from the vehicle through the 16-way data link connector.
NOTE:
As an alternate power source, the D.A.R.T. (Diagnostic and Reprogramming Tool) power supply cable p/n 0T237497 can be optionally used to power the S.R.T. with the DRB III/CoPilot power supply. This option is useful when downloading software and taking the S.R.T. to a remote location for vehicle reprogramming.
5. Connect the S.R.T. to the DealerCONNECT client using the serial interface cable (CH8432-1). The S.R.T. receives vehicle re-programming files from TechTOOLS through this cable.
6. Use the "Device Options" tab found in TechTOOLS and select Com Port to SRI. Follow any screen prompts to RELAUNCH TechTOOLS as necessary.
7. Identify the vehicle by using the YME (Year/Model/Engine) selection in TechTOOLS.
NOTE:
TechTOOLS cannot automatically read vehicle information (VIN) from these models.
8. Select the "Show Updates" button in TechTOOLS.
9. TechTOOLS will list the part numbers and descriptions of software available for download into the S.R.T. based on the YME you selected.
NOTE:
Software availability will always be referenced by a Service Bulletin.
10. Select the appropriate software (based on Part Number recorded in step 2) for download into the S.R.T.
11. Select the "Download to S.R.T." button in the TechTOOLS screen.
12. Follow any prompts seen on TechTOOLS or the S.R.T. screen.
13. When the software download process to the S.R.T. is complete, disconnect the S.R.T. from the DealerCONNECT client.
NOTE:
The process just completed only programs the S.R.T. with vehicle software.
S.R.T. TO VEHICLE RE-PROGRAMMING PROCEDURES
Once the S.R.T. is loaded with vehicle software, it can be taken to the vehicle(s) that require update based on applicable Service Bulletins.
NOTE:
The software that is loaded into the S.R.T. will stay in memory indefinitely. This provides a means for re-programming multiple vehicles over a wide time expanse without having to re-load vehicle software into the S.R.T.
1. Connect the S.R.T. to the vehicle with the vehicle interface cable (CH8432-2). Connect both (16-way and 12-way) data link connectors to the vehicle. The S.R.T. is powered by the 16-way data link connector and vehicle communication (re-programming) occurs through the 12-way data link connector.
CAUTION:
Do not disconnect either data link connector until the re-programming process is completed.
2. The S.R.T. will boot up after connecting it to the vehicle data link connectors.
3. Follow all screen prompts until the re-programming function is complete.
4. When the re-programming function is complete, record the new part number for the Authorized Modification label.
5. After the new part number is recorded, turn off the ignition and remove the S.R.T. from the vehicle.
NOTE:
The following step is required by law.
6. Type the necessary information on the "Authorized Modification Label" p/n 04275086AB and attach near the VECI label (Fig. 1).
