Compass: Testing and Inspection

PROCEDURES FOR CALIBRATING THE COMPASS

1. When the ignition key is the "ACC" or "ON" position, the vehicle's current directional heading (N, NE, E, SE, S, SW, Wand NW) will be displayed.

NOTE: When the ignition key is in the "ACC" or "ON" position, the green indicator (A) should be illuminated. Make sure the green indicator on. If it's not, press the display switch (B) for more than 6 seconds, less than 9 seconds, until the indicator illuminates.

2. If you press the display switch more than 12 seconds, you can recalibrate compass variance.

3. If the display reads "CAL," there may be a strong magnetic field interfering with the compass. In this case, the compass may need calibration.

4. If the "CAL" is displayed, drive the vehicle in a circle at about 5mph (8km/h) or less until the "CAL" goes off. If the "CAL" is not displayed, but compass calibration is required, press and hold the display switch for 12 seconds, or until "CAL" is displayed. With "CAL" displayed, drive the vehicle in circle at less than 5mph (8km/h) or less until the "CAL" goes off.

PROCESSES FOR ADJUSTING THE COMPASS VARIANCE
1. Under certain circumstances, as during a long distance cross-country trip, it will be necessary to adjust for compass variance.
Compass variance is the difference between earth's magnetic north and true geographic north. If not adjusted to account for compass variance, your compass could give false readings.

2. Press the display switch more than 9 seconds, less than12 seconds. The current zone number will appear in the display.

3. Find your current location and variance zone number on the map given on the left.
4. Press the display switch until the new zone number appears in the display. After 5 seconds of inactivity, the original item (Outside temperature/Compass) displayed again.

NOTE:
- Do not install the ski rack, antenna, etc. Which are attached to the vehicle by means of a magnet. They affect the operation of the compass.
- If the compass deviates from the correct indication soon after repeated adjustment, have the compass checked at an authorized Mitsubishi dealer.
- The compass may not indicate the correct compass point in the places shown below:
- Vehicles in tunnels or parked in buildings
- Expressways, near railroads, underneath railroad cables, or over subways
- Near transformer stations or high voltage power lines The compass returns to the correct compass point when the vehicle moves to an area where the geomagnetism in stabilized.

AUTO-DIMMING FEATURE TEST
1. When the ignition key is in the "ACC" or "ON" position, the green indicator light should be illuminated. Make sure the green indicator light on. If it's not, press the display switch for more than 6 seconds, less than 9 seconds, until the indicator illuminates.

2. Cover the forward-facing light sensor on the back of the mirror with a black cloth.
3. While in a well-lit area, make sure light strikes the sensor on the front of the mirror, simulating glare from vehicles behind you. The mirror will dim within 12 minutes if the testing for the first time. If the mirror does not dim, replace the inside rear view mirror.
