Repair Procedure
1. Inspect the convertible soft top rear window for looseness and/or detachment (Fig. 1).
2. Is the rear glass loose and/or detaching from the convertible top.
a. Yes >>> Proceed to Step # 3 and replace the convertible top cover.
b. No >>> Return the vehicle to the customer, this bulletin does not apply.
3. Relieve the hydraulic pressure in order to manually cycle the convertible top.
a. Turn the ignition to the "ON" position.
b. Push down on the convertible top switch and hold in that position.
c. Turn the ignition "OFF" and continue to push down on the switch 5 seconds.
d. After 5 seconds the hydraulic system pressure will be relieved.
NOTE:
The hydraulic pressure must be relieved before the top can manually be raised or lowered.
4. Lower the windows to the full downward position.
5. Disconnect the negative battery terminal.
6. Open the decklid and make sure the rear cargo compartment divider is in the vertical/closed position to allow the convertible top to retract manually into the top storage compartment without obstruction (Fig. 2).
7. Unlock the top from the windshield header by pulling the release handle (1) down and turning it clockwise just past a quarter turn (Fig. 3).
8. Push up on the convertible top release handle to create a gap between the header and top of approximately 8 inches (200 mm). Once the top is free, rotate the release handle back to its stored position (Fig. 3).
9. With the decklid open, unlock the rear bow by inserting an alien wrench into the rear bow latch (1) and turning clockwise. The rear bow should release from the tonneau cover/hard boot (4) (Fig. 4).
10. Close the decklid and lift up on the rear bow and secure in the vertical position (Fig. 4).
11. Insert the multifunction tool (1) (supplied with the vehicle) into gap/release slot (2) in front of the tonneau cover/hard boot and rotate counterclockwise until the tonneau cover/hard boot is released (Fig. 5).
12. Lift the tonneau cover/hard boot (2) up and support in the vertical position (Fig. 6).
13. Lower the top assembly into the top storage compartment (Fig. 7).
14. Remove the front cover retaining screws (1) and remove the front header fabric retainer (Fig. 7).
15. Remove the left and right front side weather strips (1) (right side shown, left side similar) (Fig. 8).
16. Remove the cover to front bow retaining rivet on the left and right side (2) (right side shown, left side similar) (Fig. 8).
17. Manually place the top assembly in the upright position.
18. Remove the top cover from the front bow/header and fold back to gain access to the front cover retaining strap rivets (1) (Fig. 9).
19. Drill out the front cover retaining strap rivets (1) (one on each side) (Fig. 9).
20. Disconnect the right and left cover support cables (2) from the front bow/header (3) (left side shown, right side similar) (Fig. 10).
21. Disconnect the right and left connectors from the rear window heating grid/heated backlite (Fig. 11).
NOTE:
Move the rear bow up far enough to access the heated backlite wiring.
22. Reach behind the rear bow (2), remove the plastic retainer, and separate the wiring (3) from the bow (Fig. 11).
23. Using a trim stick or other suitable device, carefully pry up the inner edge of the seal (1) from the bottom/side of the bow (Fig. 12).
NOTE:
The weatherstrip must be pulled from the bottom side first, or damage to the weatherstrip may result.
24. Grasp the edge of the weatherstrip (2) and pull outward to remove the seal from the rear bow (Fig. 12).
25. Drill out the right and left cover side retaining rivets (1) (left side shown, right side similar) (Fig. 13).
26. Release the cover side retainers from the rear bow support by sliding the cover down and then out (Fig. 13).
27. Remove the right and left top support cable (1) from the cover (2) (left side shown, right side similar) (Fig. 14).
28. Fold the side of the cover (1) up to gain access to the rear cover retaining straps (3) (Fig. 15).
29. Drill out the right and left rear cover retaining strap rivets (2) (left side shown, right side similar) (Fig. 15).
30. Remove the cover (1) from the rear bow (2) (Fig. 16).
31. Fold the side of the cover (2) up to gain access to the stay pad rivet (1) (Fig. 17).
32. Drill out the stay pad rivet (1) from either side of the center bow and reposition the stay pad (3) 50 the top cover can be removed (Fig. 17).
NOTE:
The cover must be removed from the side that the stay pad rivet was removed from.
33. Remove the cover assembly (1) by sliding the top cover off the remaining bows (Fig. 18).
NOTE:
Use caution when sliding the top cover into the center bows. Pull the cover into the bows slowly to prevent tearing of the cover.
NOTE:
For the first several cycles of the top, the effort required to latch the top will be higher than normal. The effort will return to normal after the new cover has settled.
34. Align the cover supports with the two center bows. Install the cover assembly (1) into the two center bows and guide into the bows slowly. Pull the cover assembly slowly until the cover supports are all the way into the center bows (Fig 19).
35. Attach the cover stay strap (3) to the center bow with a new rivet (1) (Fig. 20).
NOTE:
All old cover retaining clips must be removed from the rear bow before the new cover is to be installed.
NOTE:
The new cover will have a center mark that needs to be aligned with the rear bow latch.
36. Install the cover (1) onto the rear bow (2). Push the cover into the rear bow firmly until the cover retaining clips are engaged into the rear bow (Fig 21).
37. Position the weatherstrip (2) on the rear bow (Fig. 22).
38. Firmly press downward to seat the weatherstrip (2) in the rear bow (Fig. 22).
39. Install the weatherstrip (1) on the side bow (Fig. 22).
40. Secure the heated backlite wiring (3) into the rear bow (2), and install the plastic retainer (Fig. 23).
41. Reconnect the right and left connectors (1) to the rear window heating grid I heated backlite (Fig. 23).
42. Install the cover support cables (1) into the cover (2) (left side shown, right side similar) (Fig. 24).
43. Install the right and left cover rear retaining straps (3) with new rivets (2) (left side shown, right side similar) (Fig. 25).
44. Install the cover side retainers to the top frame by sliding the retainer into the frame and pushing up to lock into place (Fig. 26).
45. Install the right and left new retaining rivets (1) (left side shown, right side similar) (Fig. 26).
46. Manually place the top in the upright position.
47. Attach the front cover retaining straps (2) with new rivets (1) (one each side) (left side shown, right side similar) (Fig. 27).
48. Connect the cover support cables (2) to the front bow/header (3) (left side shown, right side similar) (Fig. 28).
49. Install the top cover/fabric to the front bow/header.
50. Lower the top assembly into the cargo compartment and install the right and left front bow side cover retaining rivets (2) (one on each side) (Fig. 29).
51. Install the left and right front side weather strips (1) (right side shown, left side similar) (Fig. 29).
52. Install the front cover retainer and retaining screws (1). Tighten screw to 5 N.m (44 in. lbs.)(Fig. 30).
53. Manually raise the convertible top and turn the release handle counterclockwise to the stop in order to lock the convertible top onto the windshield header (Fig. 31).
54. Lift the rear bow (1) until it is in its vertical position (Fig. 32).
55. Lower the tonneau cover (2) (Fig. 32).
NOTE:
The tonneau cover flaps will automatically extend while lowering the tonneau cover. The flaps can be damaged if not allowed to extend automatically.
56. Insert the multifunction tool (3) (supplied with vehicle) into gap/slot in front of the tonneau cover (1) and rotate clockwise until the tonneau cover is locked (Fig. 33).
57. Lower the rear bow into the tonneau cover (Fig. 34).
58. Open the decklid and lock the rear bow by inserting an alien wrench into the rear bow latch (1) and turning counterclockwise (Fig. 34).
59. Connect the negative battery cable.
60. Check the power operation of the convertible top. Refer to the detailed procedures available in DealerConnect > TechCONNECT > under: Owner Manuals > Understanding the features of your vehicle > Convertible Top Operation.
