Body - Liftgate Bumper Won't Tighten

Liftgate Bumper Fastener Will Not Tighten

OVERVIEW:
This bulletin involves repairing the welded nut within the liftgate.

MODELS:

2004 - 2005 (ZH) Crossfire Coupe

SYMPTOM/CONDITION:

The technician may find that the liftgate bumper fastener will not tighten.

DIAGNOSIS:

Using a torque wrench, attempt to tighten the liftgate bumper fastener to 10 N.m (88 in. lbs.). If the required torque cannot be attained, perform the Repair Procedure.





PARTS REQUIRED:

REPAIR PROCEDURE:





1. Remove the lower liftgate trim panel. Refer to the service information available in TechCONNECT. Reference: Service Info, Group 23 - Body/Decklid/Hatch/Liftgate/Tailgate/Trim Panel - Removal.

NOTE:
In the next step use a shop vacuum to avoid any metal shavings entering the vehicle.

2. Using a drill motor with a 6.2 mm (0.25 in.) drill, drill out the welded nut.

3. Using the 05174467AA screw and the 05097674AA nut, fasten the bumper to the liftgate.

4. Position and adjust the liftgate bumper. Refer to the service information available in TechCONNECT. Reference: Service Info, Group 23 - Body/Decklid/Hatch/Liftgate/Tailgate - Adjustments.

5. When the adjustment is complete, tighten the fastener to 10 N.m (88 in. lbs.).

6. Install the lower liftgate trim panel. Refer to the service information available in TechCONNECT. Reference: Service Info, Group 23 - Body/Decklid/Hatch/Liftgate/Tailgate/Trim Panel - Installation.
